  1. Yanchen - The shinsa process is exactly the same as in Japan - the personnel are exactly the same as in Japan, they will just be in Burlingame this time around. No one should get us confused with the NBTHK - we are much more a collector focused organization, in every instance we attempt to provide attributions to particular smiths, including generation and time period, we do this even if an item is rejected for some reason and ours are the only paper that includes the attestation "Shoshin" stating that the article is genuine, this is legally binging in Japan which means that we can be sued if we are not absolutely correct, this is why our standards and our fail rate are so high, making our papers the more valuable choice for the researcher and collector. -tch
  2. Do we have better photos of the boshi?
  3. I think HUGE is a relative term and we all need a better reference in our minds eye...
  4. Most sites have a section for "Sword accessories" or "Other" listing new and antique sword stands. Try Meirin Sangyo - www.nipponto.co.jp -t

    Tsuba boxes

Anyone know a supplier of CUSTOM boxes for tsuba, preferably in the Tokyo area? Any help appreciated, -tch
  6. Yeah, not true Baba and frankly your habit of pissing on the walls of every thread you join is getting annoying...
  7. So one of the best resources for identifying flowers on tsuba is the CHURCH catalogue - I would peruse that and you will see lots of plum with similar buds and leaves, I think thats what we are seeing... -t
  8. I think you are looking at plum or some other flower, perhaps there were other elements that have since been lost or rubbed off? -t
  9. Thats a neat one - Bishu Sakai? ju Kanemitsu 2603 years from the founding of the nation - made this for certain victory in the Great East Asian War? The last is something sword, so maybe auspicious? can't see but I am sure someone with better eyes will... cool. -tch
  10. Stop me when I achieve Britishness; "2500 Bloody Pounds!?!" now "Almost 8,000 bloody pounds!?!" Unbelievable - we are all behind you on this, if you need letters of support just ask, if you need letters from the NTHK just ask. -tch
  11. I would look at Kanewaka and consider the mei an homage... -t
  12. Imagine a kantei session - you allow your guests to examine your sword blade with the nakago covered - once all the bids are in you remove the "covers" and everyone can see the attribution - you only need to remove the handle once a year for cleaning... I had a friend in Japan with a Sadamune with a Shumei - he had a special order tsuka and wooden habaki that would "clip" onto the nakago rather than slide on and off. And Richard I would say this is not common... -t
  13. Every year in April Gary and always on the first weekend of the festival -
  14. I certainly like the Shizu call - Hosho never made this shape. Can we see a close-up of the hamon in the habaki-moto as it enters the nakago?
  15. Fred always has two or three tables at the CBF and back in the day even Russ put some stuff out... -t
  16. Each year in April we do a public display of swords and fittings drawn from our personal collections. This year was a great display and we enjoyed a huge turnout by the public. If y'all are ever in San Francisco in the Springtime please join us. -tch nccbf.org
  17. Do we know who organizes this event? Can anyone put me in touch? Thank you -tch
  18. Mostly Shinto, Shinshinto and Gendaito no big name Koto pieces listed. So I would think you're just seeing the mid-range... -tch
  19. We at the NCJSC, have moved in the same direction - looking forward to exciting happenings in the digital realm. Also shared inspiration and collaboration across the miles, the seas and beyond. The basic tenet still holds true; "Support your local sword club!" -tch
  20. A polisher should remove any but the deepest chip. kirikomi are often left alone. Hard to tell from your photos but these cuts look new - I think this happened after the polish so I am calling Shenanigans! -t
  21. The NBTHK did an excellent monograph on the influence of Masamune a couple of years ago - I would also look for the Sano Bijutsu-kan exhibit catalogue from a few years ago... -t
  22. But the Omote is meant to face OUTWARD towards the world at large in the case of a spear that means toward the blade. You don't paint the inside of your house to show your neighbors what good taste you have...
  23. This is an Owari Kan-ryu spear - the tsutsu or sleeve slides up and down the pole allowing for quick thrusts. In this case the "hooks" allow the tsuba/tsutsu which are integral to be locked in place when not is use. This is NOT what you are seeing with our sample tsuba because again the omote would be facing the user so no. -tch Peep out Youtube for Owari Kan-ryu demonstrations very very cool stuff btw
