  1. Just my 2 cents but that's kitae ware, not a hagire.
  2. Adam, I have no idea. Possible I guess. I checked the Sesko Koto Meikan and broke out the Fujishiro as well a bit ago. The style and cutting very different from source material examples. If you are going to the Tampa shinsa personally and not mailing the sword in, why not submit it? It would be fun and knowledge building experience to go through a shinsa no matter the result IMO. Not a huge cost either. EDIT: Stephen posted right before me If the cost is not a hindrance to you, I still think the experience will be worth the effort.
  3. This is a sweet Motohira, just check out the expanded pictures. Love this one, too bad I am broke: http://www.sword-auction.jp/en/content/as18565-%E5%88%80%EF%BC%9A%E8%96%A9%E6%91%A9%E5%A5%A5%E5%A4%A7%E5%92%8C%E5%AE%88%E5%B9%B3%E6%9C%9D%E8%87%A3%E5%85%83%E5%B9%B3-katana-satsuma-oku-yamato-ason-omi-motohira
  4. Adam, I have not seen many of these swords, looking through Koto Meikan, I don't see anything resembling this mei style. School swords can have many mei variants though.
  5. Great examples, love this thread!
  6. Great topic and discussion! I was checking in all day from work. Knowledge base here is amazing. And clean discussion too. I generally like to study and appreciate most anything and especially if there is an associated story about the smith, the time period, or the providence of a sword. BUT......the title said most unpopular opinions so here are a few of mine: - Outside of Ichimonji, I just don't get any vibe or thrill out of Bizen blades. I have spent time on many but I almost never save a link or add one to my "review to buy" list etc. I understand this is a serious offense, but I thought we were still in the trust tree right? In the nest? (obscure reference) - I have a mental MUTE/BLOCK on anything Kanesada. So many fakes, so many bad ones, and they come up all the time, day in, day out. Even if a good one, I just skip over every one at this point. - I think Shinto swords get the shaft most of the time in appreciation, but Shinto had many excellent schools (Mishina, Ishido, Hizen) that are fun to learn from and study. Also here is where the average mortal can get a good to high quality sword without having to sell a kidney or be rich as a starting point (last point is a thread starter all on it's own).
  7. post link please.
  8. I have no skills in F/K kantei. Elegant and wonderful additions Frank, I really like them. Also, Happy Birthday for earlier
  9. Another plug! I added two new sword bags from Touken Komachi over the last 2 weeks. Ms. Shiho Tsukada is excellent to communicate with and shipping was prompt. The silk sword bags are excellent and the color (I ordered dark navy blue) is rich. I also got some new mekugi pins of smoked bamboo. Can highly recommend this seller.
  10. Great research work Dave and YES this study sucks you in! When I posted years ago I was pretty green on mei and style. Agree with Bazza with what he said.
  11. Indeed, I love looking for hard to find information, always fun.
  12. Besides the Uda entries, the one lone Rai Kunihisa example was on page 264:
  13. I could only find some Uda entries for Kunihisa and a lone Rai Kunihisa example in Sesko's Koto Meikan.
  14. Chris H., The Shinshinto sword has a LOT of ji nie. Like cracked pepper all over the blade. I think what's different for the Koto sword is the nie itself seem .......thicker, more pronounced? Hard to explain but easy to see in hand.
  15. I was doing some file cleaning/arranging tonight and I got side tracked and made a comparison picture that is amazing (to me) and figured I would share it here. Left: Yamato Hosho/Tegai (made ~1300-1360) Right: Suifu Ju Katsumura Norikatsu (made in 1867) Spectacular:

    Puff

    Perfect set!
  17. Nice shots Dwain If you don't want to go the flicker route, easy to re-size as Jean suggests.
  18. Try candle light or black light. It never stops being amazing.
  19. Some new pictures of the Yamato sword. I think I was finally able to capture the running masame this sword showcases. Look at the two pictures below from right to left and you can follow the forge lines in the hamon on up through the body of the sword: Some hamon activity photos. The sungashi is excellent, and plenty to see activity wise: Finally a showcase of excellent nie work. This picture gets me excited, it's spectacular IMO:
  20. I still don't see any point to this whole thing.
  21. These came out really well. Thanks for posting them. I need to try outdoor pics, but dead of winter now so have to wait until Spring.
  22. I second this
  23. Excellent site. Read every post.
  24. Congratulations Peter!!!! A Naotane Triumvirate. A worthy goal well done.
