  1. I don't think it's just a replica, I think it is a functional sword in carbon steel, replicas or decorative swords blades are simply aluminium or stainless steel. Just no Japanese or antique, factory made and made in china.

Do you know guys if there is a book out there where you can see full koshiraes of diferent schools and periods including it's characteristics, like saya urushi and color choices? Thanks
  4. Wait,so, are modified rapiers guards considered tsuba?
  5. A game like this could have been fun, but the prices aren't realistic, heck, the seller of the one on the right is selling modern cheap souvenirs swords for 200-500. Leaving that aside, both of this sellers ask way too much for the things they sell, But,the one on the right would be more expensive, work is not as complex as the one on the left but it has hozon papers.
  6. Yes, wouldn't any aging at all change the image an artist had in mind for it's piece and this it artistic integrity? according to the wabi sabi aesthetic, time and imperfection adds to the beauty. But at what point it goes from antique to junk? I think it depends on the eyes of the beholder; from an historic point of view, there is no junk
  7. Very sad to hear, my condolences to his friends and family.
  8. In pictures, two large tachi tsubas from the heianjo school (1400's-1500's) In my opinion i would guess it depends on wheter its judged with an historic or an artistic point of view, What do you think? Thanks
  9. Wow, that one has so much more definition, I wish i could see some better photos, thanks for sharing
  10. Yesterday found this tsuba, a little brass tsuba. I would say its probably gendai or meiji period, doesn't seem very old. Personally i would feel bad mounting it, kinnda like stabbing a baby turtle I have never seen a tsuba shaped like a turtle in this way, remembers me to the mushroom heads tsubas, What do you guys think about the age? Is this a common design? Comparing examples of turtles in Japanese tsubas with this one, they appear to have a different aesthetic. Regards
  11. Im back reporting results: After the first cleaning with alcohol, most of the shiny went off, leaving a very sticky tsuba with very ugly grey dull layers of the discolured laquer i guess. Followed the paint stripper. After this, i repeated the process to make sure no laquer stays on my tsuba. Finally i cleaned it with the tootbrush and soap to get rid of anything could stay on the tsuba. And now, here is the result: At least now is a sincere tsuba, not a shiny ugly thing anymore, but now, a problem with missing patina is visible, with the light of the night i can't see much, and my pics aren't that clear, i will try tomorrow with the sunlight. PD: i'm very tired or those are some kind of markings?
  12. It's not paint and the laquer is not old, it has nothing to do with urushi, is kindda like the laquer used for the hair, i hope it comes off easy, but no idea how this is gonna end
  13. I'm glad to hear i can remove it, i will try the paint stripper this night, many thanks both Guido and Ford!
  14. Bought this tsuba to mount on a sword for cheap(junk) price. When i received it in hand, it was a surprise to see how thin it is compared with late edo tsubas i have. Unfortunately, it seem to have been coated with some kind of laquer, so i can't appreciate the patina. Another thing to notice is the weird position of the kozuka ana towards the nakago ana(added after?) and the wakizashi size(6,5x6,5x0,2/0,3), but also the mimi is covered with copper. Do you think it's an early guard or a later production with the same style? If this was one of those early tsubas at some point, could it be resized to fit a wakizashi(thus the copper covered mimi)? Is the design a dove? Any recommendations about getting that ugly shiny laquer off? It resist quite good the toothbrush, the texture remind me to the laquer spray used in painting. Thanks Sinceresly
  15. N.2 owari?, the heinjajo in deplorable conditions is the 5, 6 is a lovely namban tsuba. Edit: Ah, i see you missclicked, sorry
  16. It's possible? Of course, but,in my opinion it wouldn't be a good collection or study piece as its deplorable conditions won't let you appreciate the complete work, it's kindda like buying the lower half of a famous painting, having great part of its composition stripped,it kindda loss its meaning, nothing good will come out of it. Heinjajo was a school, but could also be described as a tendency imho. The main idea was common, but different approaches were done to reach it. Regards

    Monster Tsuba

And if this super thick tsubas were part of some technic/school that involved the use of tsubas as a mace?

    Monster Tsuba

Maybe it could be an attempt to make an extremely long sword functional, taking down the point of balance?
  19. While you wait for the book, here is a snack, modern nodachi from a popular incoming game ''For Honor', made using tamaghane but not so Japanese methods, but is always great to see the final result https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbSrnjNGBdA&index=1&list=LLH-sFgXd9Fhearvewh8cVYg
  20. Everything is for sale at the right price
  21. Can we make this a Dragons in clouds tsuba thread? Here is a little dragon which had loads of rust when bought. Cleaning it with bamboo but seems to have severe rust damage in the lower part
  22. Lukas, but that kashira matches with that fuchi and tsuba you posted, 3 of them are heianjo school, are they different sizes?
  23. Would go with Nara or Shoami
  24. Hi George When the listing was up, there were close up photos available, i saw the strokes, the lines, and seriously, cast pieces doesn't have that definition. Maybe it got so little bids because the pictures went down. I would like to show the tsuba now, unfortunately it will take a couple weeks .What makes you suspect is cast?, and also thanks for your concern
