Nice 95 Dom! It's a Tokyo 1st Arsenal blade, but with the steel fuchi, I don't know which shop made it. @Kiipu or @Shamsy might know who was making them for Tokyo. Is that color an off-white or a tan? If white, it's one made for the winter/arctic ops.

8 seppa and kamon habaki - Was likely a really nice gunto in it's day. -
Sam, Rob probably has more experience with them than me. That one with the butterfly lock/notch at the end was unique. Most of them have smooth ends that simply, like Russ said, slide in and out. Rob could tell you what type of wood they used too. I know it's been mentioned on various threads.

I haven't made a practice of getting shots of the opening of the saya, but I did find one of a kaigunto. You can see how the blade would only make contact with the wood not the metal koiguchi.
-
Yes, If the sound you are referring to is the lovely silence of blade sliding on wood, then we understand! But if you mean Hollywoods notorious "Schwingggg", then that, my friend, is pure fiction. This is the only diagram I have, there may be better one's out there: Here is a photo of one of my mantetsu with the liner out.

Welcome Domenic! @dpast32 While we wait for photos, check out these free websites with tons of info on the Type 95: Non-commissioned officers Gunto 1935 (Type 95 Guntō)/title> (ohmura-study.net) 造兵廠の標識 An Arsenal trademark and inspection mark (ohmura-study.net) https://www.warrelic...o-sword-info-228172/

That's the one, John, thanks! Now it's in the files.

The mekugi screw is standard for the Chinese fakes, as is the tsuka that has clearly never seen a layer of paint. The tsuka looks just like the ones shown by Trystan, @BANGBANGSAN, in a recent photo from a Chinese factory. It had an overflowing box of these tsuka. Wish I could find that photo, so I could file it. I don't know how they age the saya so well, but they've figured out how to do it.

Not in great shape, and the tsuba wasn't darkened, but all the fuchi and koiguchi appear to be the darkened silver, on a custom 98. It has the flat, untwisted ito wrapping style. Not common for Army, and a nice rayskin saya cover. -
-
Ah, thanks Mal! That would make more sense.
-
All I can say is I paid $1,400 for mine a couple of years ago.
-
If it's an "8", it's not on the fittings, as shown. We don't see the other side, though.
-
That's an interesting one, John. I have one with a horizontal 8 about that size on a '43 Kanemichi Any chance this is a shop logo/mark, I wonder? @mecox - Any chance there were a Kanemichi and a Hidetoshi working together? Of course, it could be a sword shop that bought blades from all over, assembling their own gunto, and this was their mark.

Got to share this! Bill Bachman (BachmanW) on this Gunboards Thread has posted an NCO leather tassel that contained tiny, handmade dice! You squeeze the tassel end-to-end openning the sides to get them out. Now I'm going to have to go check all mine! I'm sure such a thing is pretty rare, though.

Wow, John! Good one! Will need to bring in the experts on this: @Kiipu @SteveM @BANGBANGSAN Minor Update: Looks like I have this one on file from Aug '23. Bbdear was selling it back then, but as far as I can tell, we never got this side translated.

I have 3 other of his blades, 2 of them Oct '43, and the mei is the same. I have not seen any Na-stamped blades that were traditionally made.

Yes, a Koa Isshin Mantetsu. John's link has a nice summary about them. There is more here: Ohmura site: Koa Isshin Blade. And thanks to several guys here at NMB, we've got an extensive write-up on them here: -
I haven't either! Quite unique and nicely done.
