  1. Sorry, no design debate- I don't debate in service of the absurd, there are too many worthier pursuits. An avalanche of words, serving self, will not bury truth nor disguise falsehood. So much for "abiding themes", the quest for verity in service of Art, and the development of a "good eye". I am comfortable standing by my initial post. "Vincit Omnia Veritas", -S-
  2. This is the simple you get from long practiced skillful hands and an astute eye. Those that would deem this nondescript or of little value miss the point. Would look great mounted! -S-
  3. Respectfully, Krenov is not even a blip on the radar as far as 20th furniture design is concerned. He is a good craftsman but his designs are derivative of a score of vastly greater talents, his real gift was indefatigable self promotion. His "style" consists of a blend of the designs of Greene and Greene, strained through a filter of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Süe et Mare, and Pierre Chareau presented in a bottle of scandinavian origin. Cheers, -S-
  4. Stephen, Your link was a very pleasant surprise indeed, one of the best on this subject....a little gem! Thanks, -S-
  5. Sorry to confirm Johns findings, it is unfortunately a modern Chinese fake. Read the link he provided and take caution in the future, before acquiring another sword I suggest you spend some time on NMB studying the posts, they are quite educational. -S-
  6. Arnold, Very interesting, thanks for posting. I can see than this is of potential interest to many, BTW I would think there are other stamp collectors on NMB who will be happy to know of this. -S-
  7. Looks great, that'll do it! -S-
  8. Years back, during my minimal phase, I had one of the large compressed orbs. It gave off the most beautiful warm glow, gifted it to a friend who always admired it. I miss it! -S-
  9. Liberam et solutam. It is not as prevalent as the swords but there was a degree of occasional slackness that no longer exists. But again, most of these late Edo /Meiji/Taisho pastiche and 'fantasy" pieces are purchased solely for their decorative value. -S-
  10. Very surprised to see any of this still here, all much much better than the usual fare, all fairly priced. -S-
  11. The Speedster is a beauty, and Bugatti's are gorgeous, either is fine with me. Papering said piece is a waste of money as its value is entirely market driven, and its market doesn't demand "paper". -S-
  12. I am not a big fan of Aoi, and this Kogai falls into the more plentiful design category, but at least it looks relatively "unmolested" and in good nick. So much of what is availble is either "a bit past it", or obviously agressively restored..... both of these issues are a red light for me. -S-
  13. Eureka! Again, beautiful work Marco, my apologies for not being able to put you together with your work. -S-
  14. Funny but true. Reminds me of certain types of classic car purists (the Duesenberg,Bugatti, pre WW2 Mercedes crew) who would run for the garlic and crosses at the mention of American muscle cars. They would laugh and pooh pooh them at sales until a Shelby Cobra made 13.75 million USD.......suddenly you could hear a pin drop. -S-
  15. Tempted? Wonder what the final price will be, all relative (excluding hysteria) as these "theatrical" pieces generally find a ready market. Time and Time again, I've seen many more "serious" pieces grow dusty on the shelves while items like this fly away...there are many worse ways to spend ones money. -S-
  16. Piers, very surprised no one took on the signature, curious. I am sure you will find the answers in Japan. Please do let us know what you discover as I, and surely others, would really like to know. Cheers, -S-
  17. To me Tsuba and Shinsa costs would be integral, so both. But, of course, what is logical is not always so......best to make sure. -S-
  18. Agree, ease of use much improved, picture quality looks great too. I have always liked that motif, it appears others do as well...Yoshitoshi's renderings of the subject are some of my favorites. -S-
  19. Barry, I meant that he appears to have the ability to fabricate whatever you want. Trying to find exactly what you are looking for in older goods is not that easy, many others desire the same thing you do.....it down to fortune and quick reactions Keep your trigger finger limber, and at the ready, as "he who hesitates is lost". Bonne chance, -S-
  20. Hi Barry, Someone on NMB posted pictures of multiple tsuba boxes he had made a while back, I believe at one point he offered them for sale. The work was quite fine. If you search NMB perhaps you can find the post. You could, no doubt, have them made in Japan. Cheers, -S-
  21. Couldn't say with certainty Jean, but if so it's sure worthy of another look. A fine example in an exceptional state of preservation. Cheers, -S-
  22. Robin, Looks like it's been there forever, as it should, love the form and texture. In the tradition of Sen no Rikyū it is now time to build a teahouse, and I don't mean a model....LOL! Cheers, -S- p.s.-denatured alcohol, or if it's really stubborn benzene, will remove the "sticky" and do no harm.
  23. Absolutely Ken, NTHK should factor in. With the commercial preference so heavily skewed in favor of NBTHK forgetting NTHK is a regrettable, but understandable, mistake. As for lost papers and resubmissions, a factor of five percent should more than cover it. -S-
  24. Jussi, Nothing at all crazy in your reasoning, this is a piece of the puzzle that can be more or less quantified. If we add in approximate figures from major online sales platforms, auctions, show sales, private sales, museum collections, private collections, and items languishing in hidden places we can begin to get a feeling for "the number". Whatever that number may be.... it is a BIG one! -S-
  25. Ray, Did a web search, every incarnation of Kogatana but bamboo, sorry! AYS, making one is easy enough just pick your material, I've seen them made of brass, silver, mop, the afore mentioned bamboo, and even a gold one. Also, as you probably know, they are usually availble inexpensively on the Bay. -S-
