  1. Yes Gendai can be papered, at least the NTHK npo papered a sword i took to them in June,,,a Kaneyoshi that went 75pts!...I still would like to see the area that i cropped close up...think i see something up there.
  2. with each post...supect a good blade here, anything on the other side of the nakago?
  3. lt sure did wonders on your eyes....yes a polish would make it right and looks to be more than meets the eye.
  4. seeing things but id like to see this area close up with maybe some rubbing with a bone before...looks like a mei under all the black gunk...seen that before when it was filled in with pitch or tar...or like i said i may be seeing things.
  5. went the Portuguese showed up in Shinto times...one way to tell a older blade from Shinto..punched or drilled
  6. the sugata is outstanding, when was the last time you saw a 30+" oil quenched blade, plus it looks like it has some nice large nei, id have it polished, or at least looked at by Bob Benson, the lower peg hole may have been from a late war gunto, but id think maybe a Iaido set up, would like to see more pix though. BTW welcome to the NMB
  7. of rice is the key, short grain like the kind you use in resotto, think its called Arborio, more starch i belive.
  8. If you know of such a collector pass him along to me I have a great sword with the big PROBLEM every one hates still rated 74 (by NTHK npo)as a good sword for display. Saijosaku ranked, full polish, priced under polish, restoration, cost.
  9. if you dont have a way to crop reduce and rotate it can be a pain, a good photo shop does the trick. here it is could be hawley 130 or 131
  10. Please sign your post with Name and initial as per the board rules, also if you can use the boards attachment method it may help the members from the pop ups that your image shack is linked to. Two very fine looking swords, closer shot of the mei please as from that pix in my mind it looks a little shaky, it could be the distance.

  12. That is the book to start with, you can get it on Amazon for around 15.00 +shipping. sometimes you can find it on Ebay for less. Its one of my best sellers for those just starting out. It covers a lot for the size of the book, id digest it for a month or so before looking for another book on Nihonto. I still use it in reference now after all these years.

  16. do not send a sword to Nippon with a stamp, in most cases you may not get it back. I have heard they have beed destroyed, back to bending a blade, you can play at it and Koichi posted a good way to do it, i think it best left for a togi. just my HO.

  19. want for 80 bucks, use it as a camp knife.
  20. If any one cares to look at the Katsumitsu, It will be on Ed Marshall's (YAKIBA) table, then his web site if it does not sale at the show. Here is his write up, i thank Ed here for his help. KATANA BIZEN OSAFUNE “KATSUMITSU†SUE-KOTO / EISHO 1504 SAIJOSAKU / RYOWAZAMONO NTHK PAPERS KOSHIRAE SUGATA: SHINOGI ZUKURI MEI: MUMEI DATE: NONE NAGASA: 66cm OVERALL: MIHABA: KASANE: 0.625cm (0.25") SORI: 1.25CM (0.5â€) NAKAGO: O-SURIAGE MEKUGI ANA: TWO YASURIME: KATTESAGARI MUNE: IORI HADA: ITAME HAMON: BOSHI: MIDARE KOMI HABAKI: ONE PIECE GOLD FOIL HORIMONO: NONE BIZEN OSAFUNE “KATSUMITSU†KATANA IN KOSHIRAE ATTRIBUTED TO DEN BIZEN OSAFUNE KATSUMITSU BY THE NTHK. HAWLEYS LIST A LARGE NUMBER OF SMITH’S USING THE NAME KATSUMITSU, HOWEVER MOST CAN BE ELIMINATED BY THE PERIOD ATTRIBUTION OF EISHO 1504. THIS NARROWS IT DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY AND FUJISHIRO’S ONLY LISTS ONE FOR THE EISHO 1504, THIS IS KATSUMITSU, JIROZAEMONNOJO WHO IS HIGHLY RATED AT SAIJOSAKU AND RYOWAZAMONO. THERE WERE SUBTLE DIFFERENCES IN THE WAY THE DIFFERENT KATSUMITSU SMITHS SIGNED THEIR WORK, UNFORTUNATELY THIS SWORD HAS BEEN SHORTEND AND THE MEI LOST, HENCE THE DEN ATTRIBUTION. THIS SWORD IS IN FRESH POLISH AND WHICH GREATLY ENHANCES THE STUDY OF THE ABUNDANT ACTIVETY FOUND IN THIS SUE-KOTO BIZEN KATANA. THE ONLY NEGATIVE FEATURE OF THIS SWORD OTHER THAN THE LOSS OF THE MEI IS A TINY HAIGIRE. THIS HAIGIRE IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE, IN FACT THE SHINSA TEAM MISSED IT ALL TOGETHER AND WAS POINTED OUT BY THE OWNER. EVEN WITH THIS SMALL FLAW THE SWORD WAS GIVEN A KANTEISHO OF 74/100 POINTS, AND STILL DEEMED WORTHY OF PRESERVATION, AS WELL AS AN EXCELLENT STUDY/DISPLAY PIECE. THIS SWORD WOULD LIKELY BE VALUED IN EXCESS OF 25K IF NOT FOR THIS. ON THE POSITIVE SIDE THIS MEANS THAT YOU CAN OWN A KOTO PERIOD SWORD IN NEW POLISH, PAPERED, RATED SAIJOSAKU AND RYOWAZAMONO, AND IN KOSHIRAE FOR A MERE FRACTION OF IT’S TRUE VALUE.
