Hello,
As you can see on the image and on the chisel strokes:
The NAGA character was probably original and the third character made with another tool at another time. The second character was removed hours before the third.
EDIT: Looking some more at the image...there could be one character below the NAGA.

Hello,
New info to this thread/request.
I received paper for this knife now.
The paper gives me more headache, but hopefully it is clarification to anyone of you out there.
Papers state:
平安城 助房
Heianjo Sukefusa
Musashi – Heianjo Ishido Sukefusa 平安城石堂助房, Heianjo-ju Sukefusa nanban-tetsu o motte kore o tsukuru 平安城住助房以南蛮鉄造之
Any ideas for more info?

I will post some pictures as soon as I get it safely home.
There will be a polish and I don't know the time window for that.
Thx for all the responses and help here.

I know, but I'm sorry. The blade is in Japan for Kanteisho. It was released today. Next issue for me is to decide whether I will have it polished or not.

Thanks for the comments!
Sebastien,
Handed in for papering - Let's see what will come out of that. I hope it doesn't say Osafune : )
Chris,
A very good guess. Did not think of that at all. Good input.
Jacques,
No pictures yet. As I don't have the sword here. I also think it is an interesting object to study.

BREAKING NEWS
First of all, thanks you for the support, images and thoughts of mind.
Second, I resubmitted the blade with a letter of the gathered information from my research and your posts.
Third, Hozon was issued.
Thanks for the support.

Hello all,
I have a sword what appears to be signed only with:
長船 - OSAFUNE
A rough dating by feel, shape and characeristics would be between 1300-1400 and to be more precise it leans towards MUROMACHI. Only an early guess.
Kissaki: KO/IKUBI
Sori: 1.4cm as SURIAGE/at least 2.1 in its original form
Tachi Mei: 長船
Naga: 54.5cm/at least 61cm
I'm trying to determine:
1. age of the blade
2. possible maker
Initial questions:
A. Are the known swords that was signed only with 長船?
B. I have consulted books and internet. Does anyone here have some more input?
I will post some pictures later.

Hello,
I have a Kanda Kanetsune myself. An uncleaned tang with a nice blade along with paper.
If the buyer does not want yours. Please refer him to me. You will get a percentage :-)

Jean,
Thanks - I don't enjoy whiskey, but I got the point ( :
I did search for "Goto Tsuba" and obviously many results. Checking the images I found one Tsuba that I recognised from my collection.
Is this a Mino-Goto or a "real"?

I will try to find some more info.

Ok guys,
Now I will make a statement : )
Star stamped blades were only used as a mark which the army used for as an approval. Like a NATO-number used on equipment today.
Both traditionally made blades and non-traditional blades would be used in the army. Those OK'ed got a stamp.
Correct or incorrect statement?
