  1. I'm looking for help in translating the signature on an interesting matchlock I will have up for sale soon. The signature is a little hard to make out as you will see, but I did take photos from different angles and with different lighting to try to get a translator enough to see. By the way, this matchlock carbine has a feature I find intriguing. The barrel features a fluer-de-lis. The French sent 15 military advisors to Japan to teach the Satsuma samurai Western methods of warfare. Any help in translating the maker's signature would be appreciated. Thank you. --Matthew Brice
  2. I'll try that, Piers. I do have more photos of the signature with different angles and lighting. Thank you for the suggestion! --Matthew Brice
  3. Ok Piers. Feel free to comment here members. No problem at all. I look forward to hearing what anyone can offer!
  4. Yes. I’ll take a photo of the whole nakago tomorrow when I get back home. —Matt
  5. As I recall it was Shinto or Shinshinto. I have to check Fujishiro yet. —Matt
  6. I am looking for some help with my matchlock carbine. It has barrel designs that I haven't seen before. Members--please, reply via private message. Thank you! The barrel designs are in gold wire. The design which I am intriqued by is a fleur-de-lis. The French sent 15 military advisors to teach the Satsuma samurai Western methods. That's why I am curious about this matchlock carbine. The dragon is done in gold and silver. And help would be appreciated. Thank you. --Matthew Brice

  13. Yes, I can. I decided to put this sword up at auction on eBay. Here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/113331988601 The sword is an o-tanto. As mentioned, this sword was named by its maker 'Raikou'--or 'Lightning'. So interesting! As all of us know, yes there are named swords out there--but as uncommon as they are, we need to pay attention when we see one. The fuchi/kashira are matching shakudo, and gold. The tsuba has a paulownia flower motif. --Matthew Brice website: www.StCroixBlades.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/St-Croix-Blades-143165322507779/
  14. That's it then! Thanks Ray. Yeah, like you said, raimitsu does not make sense as a swordsmith's name. Thanks again, Ray!! --Matthew Brice
  15. Thank you, Ray. Rai would be an unusual name prefix. To explore for a moment--even though the second character looks very clearly to be 'mitsu'--could the second character be also a noun instead of mitsu? ...to form a named sword? Just a thought. Or perhaps, if truly 'Raimitsu', an unlisted smith? Or, even though I agree with Ray that the character appears to be rai, if one considers the possibility of poor handwriting, is this character close to any other possibilities? Thank you again, Ray. Your help is always apppreciated! --Matt
  16. The first kanji is confusing me. ______mitsu. Help! Thank you. --Matt B.

  21. I have heard from a friend who has translated for me. The side of the nakago that is full of kanji reads 'Taisho nana nen nigatsu (Tisho 7th year 2nd month)Masako (1st name) shyoji (who possess)'. So, this tanto was made in 'February, 1918'. And was Special Order made for '(Mr.) Masako'. --Matthew Brice www.StCroixBlades.com
  22. Hi Joe. Like this? --Matt P.S. This tanto has been posted in the 'For Sale' section on the Board.
