  1. I agree completely with this statement. I have spent more on books than items at this point. That being said... I'm unfortunate in not being able to retain new knowledge and my doctor tells me this will only get worse. I've come to completely depend on the experts here and even with them I still make many, many mistakes. Get the books and learn what you can! It get's so much easier after reading and going to sword shows to understand what the books tell you. Do it now, don't wait for it.

    Tsuba outlines

    Very helpful! Thank you!
  3. Thanks! Maybe... I think. :D
  4. I can't even count the number of pages I've seen removed from great books. Sure you make more money but it's just wrong. Same here. I'd rather have a sword with mediocre koshirae than buy them piecemeal. Actually I won't buy a single piece. (Full disclosure: I couldn't afford full sets anyway.)
  5. I've been wondering. Is there anyway to figure out the polisher from the stripes he leaves behind?
  6. Dear God! This stuff is,well amazing. wry gin I'm guitting collecting until I have the juice to get something even approaching this knd of quality. Thank you all! Simply amazing!
  7. Hang in there. My second sword after sending it to someone who knows a lot more than I probably ever will, turns out to be (probably) Soshu. Not only that it was made by the greatest, most prolific smith ever! Unknown. :D
  8. Holy.... I love the book Mr. Sinclair. Thank you for your contributions.
  9. Ah! Thank you very much Jean. Hmmm, I still think it's utsuri with some spots of tobi-yaki. I'll check it under a loop when I get it back. As for photography I even spent money on a pro photographer and even he couldn't get it to show. I really need to send it to a pro and have it evaluated. It'd be worth a couple hundred dollars to have it evaluated by someone who really knows there stuff. Though the member I sent it to is very knowledgeable even he suggested I send it to be evaluated. sigh I just don't know how to proceed. No more shinsa's this year, right?
  10. Yes it's still gimei but I may have some more info. A friend believes it to be Soshu, Muromachi and instead of utsuri how about hitatsura? I've never seen a a thread nor can I find any info on the board about hitatsura. I'm told Bob could help as he's the Soshu expert but what do you guys think?
  11. I think he's talking about cleaning the inside of the saya. I've read a lot about taking it apart and putting it back together but nothing about actually cleaning the gunk from inside. This is something I need to do as well I'm afraid. Any suggestions?
  12. Robert, Very nice
  13. O-Suriage certainly. The Sori is close to the nakago. All I really have.
  14. *sigh* Great. More books to buy. I've got to get to some shows. Reading is great but it's better to see and feel to understand what the words are describing. Not a lot of shows near NW Arkansas though.

    Rust removal

I've used this on a lot of roman coins. I can't recommend it for nihonto. It tends to remove more than wanted.
  16. Woot! Looking forward to the pics.
  17. A big man in a small world. RIP
  18. Thank you Stephen! Did you ever see the episode of Kung-fu where he asks his master, "why do you call me grasshopper?" The answer? "Because you are ugly! Like insect!" :D
  19. Welcome Koga! Some of the best minds in the nihonto world are here. I am not one of those.
  20. Gotcha. Will do.
  21. I now sign with my full name. bone's not a made up name. The only drawback to it was grade-school... and Jr. High... and High School. I learned to fight at a young age as you can imagine, which is also the same time I learned to get in trouble. No connection though.
  22. Hey Joe! What are looking for in the Ji? And should I PM or just ask like this?
