  2. Just noticed the subtitle for the Military Swords forum notes "non-traditional" blades. In light of Star Stamped gendaito, does this still apply? Certainly not a big deal, it just caught my eye. John C.

  7. Starting at 50 bucks. Maybe it will stay at a reasonable price for someone who needs it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/177539932123? John C.

  8. Hello again, I've aquired a katana today and believe the yasurime is suji-chigai. Its hard to see the file marks. I am not sure what shape of nakago this is. Sori is 24in 3/8. Looks to have a steep curvature starting at the hilt. I think hamon is suguhu hostsure. Grain looks like itame-hada. (Hard to tell) Has a two piece hibaki with foil on each one. Please do let me know if I got anything wrong, or add any more info thank you!

  9. I do that because true handmade swords can also be discussed in the Nihonto section since they do belong there too. As do military swords with older blades. It's worked ok for many years, I think we're good leaving it as is, and leaving the mods to make the call if something should be moved.

  10. We know that Rengetsu helped many budding artist to sell their art by adding one of her poems to them. That way they could bring in some well-needed funds. I think that explain why we see so many illustrated waka by Rengetsu with the artwork itself left unsigned. We see this in all sort of arts from Japan. An artist in training wouldn’t sign their work in respect of their teachers or more accomplished artists. I think your scroll is such a cooperation. I have several in my collection. Jan

  13. Probably Kaga (nakago, suguha) and I would guess later Muromachi one.

  14. Piers, If they are cast, they are not really "hand-made", strictly speaking. Smaller differences would then mean "not the same mold", which is well possible in a shop which produced numbers of similar items with several molds. I could imagine these candle-holders to have been standard equipment in any Japanese household before they had electricity, so possibly EDO JIDAI after all?

  15. Candles have those hollow wicks so they splutter and flicker a bit?? They emit a lovely atmospheric light yes? Echos of yesterday, lovely.

  17. I may suggest Giorgio Movilli. He did a top notch work for my Yoshihara for both shirasaya and koshirae. You can see his works at http://www.Japanese-sword.it/ Among the examples you can also find my sword. Regards Luca

  19. I have found this chart somewhat helpful and thought I would share for those who have not seen it. The chart lists the kanji in the first row, the sosho script in red in the second row, and the hiragana on which the sosho is based in the third row. Memorizing the hiragana table, in theory, should make deciphering the sosho script easier. John C.
