I often pop into little, old antique shops to see if they have anything sword related (such as tsuba). One of these is not far from where I live so I've previously let the owner know what I'm interested in - and it seems to have paid off today. 😃

I still haven't found a sword I like (and can afford) but he let me have all these WWII items today for a very cheap price.

So, maybe I should start looking for a gunto? 🤔

Sorry but the chain hanger is modern.

Did a post on them 12 months ago

That's a shame - I was really pleased with this little stash!😥

I went back and found the thread from a year ago and it was very good of you getting reproductions so you could warn others.

Could I please just doublecheck with you? In the previous thread you mentioned that the originals and the repros have springs mounted in different directions so I've taken some more photographs.
It's a heavy, chrome plated brass chain.

Thanks again.

Hector

apon looking closer,  i retract my comment on the originality of the hanger.  better pictures show some key areas that arnt consistant with modern made hangers

I can understand Hamfish’s initial skepticism, because everything looks so pristine. The zip lock baggies add to that “brand new” look. If this is all genuine, it’s a seriously awesome haul!! Congrats!

I have that same model hanger chain. Mine is much more used and abused, but it looks identical to yours as far as I can tell. Down to some pretty subtle features.

Curious, does yours have any 0000 marks inside the clip?

Hi Sam,

The ziplock baggies were my addition. Everything in Yokohama gets affected by humidity, then mold - especially paper and leather. So I have to protect anything of value with the bags.

I just examined the hanger and realised that your O marks are actually four number 8888 because mine has four number 7777 in exactly the same spot. I never would've looked without you asking!

(I could only get three in the photo but I promise there are four, like yours.)

Can you post more shots of the tassels?  The appear to be faded Field grade.

Sure Bruce.

The old guy in the store had put the white paper around them to keep them neat so I won't take it off unless I have a sword to put one on. He also threw in an extra slider and screw from somewhere!

Makes sense about the baggies, good call.

How fascinating about the 7’s! And what a coincidence at that!

I wonder the significance.

Thanks for sharing,

Glad to help Sam!

Hamfish @lonely panet, Maybe these numbers are another way of differentiating originals from fakes. 😬 (Unless the fakers read this thread of course.)

Here is a two strand hanger that came back from the war with four two's stamped inside it . Others that I have are stamped with a single 6 , what looks like 37 and what looks like three circles

It was more so the chain twist pattern,  but once i could see the spring orientation in the clip and the way the links attached to the snail clip and belt clip. it was clear that it was a OG and i was wrong

Thank you so much for checking your chain hangers Ian!

I think this interesting new subject is something Bruce @Bruce Pennington might like a record of.

Best,

Hector
