Swords Posted February 6, 2023 Report Posted February 6, 2023 Any one ever see a sword like this? quite unusual dose it give any value? Quote
Matsunoki Posted February 6, 2023 Report Posted February 6, 2023 Kissaki looks heavily reshaped? Quote
Swords Posted February 6, 2023 Author Report Posted February 6, 2023 It dose look like it and the tip is Bent I know it’s a Showa but thought it added value with the kanji being a commemorative Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 6, 2023 Report Posted February 6, 2023 I have seen many swords use that style of dating system, but I do not think I have ever seen one actually put the words “commemorative sword”. It is probably referring to the 26th hundred year anniversary of the founding of Japan. https://www.oldtokyo.com/2600th-anniversary-of-the-founding-of-Japan-1940/ Quote
Swords Posted February 6, 2023 Author Report Posted February 6, 2023 Interesting Thanks Bruce I guess it’s still a Showa-to sword not much value there Quote

David Flynn Posted February 6, 2023 Report Posted February 6, 2023 Gendaito are Nihonto. For that matter, so are Showato. 1 Quote
Brian Posted February 7, 2023 Report Posted February 7, 2023 Well, if we want to be technical, Showato are Gendaito Quote
David Flynn Posted February 7, 2023 Report Posted February 7, 2023 Yes they are. In Japan, Gendaito are called Showato and Showato are called Gunto. Quote
Brian Posted February 7, 2023 Report Posted February 7, 2023 For those who aren't sure what we are talking about... These are terms that have been co-opted into the collecting fraternity to refer to handmade or mass produced. Actually, Showa-to means Showa sword...referring to the Showa period 1926 to 1989. So even Gendaito are Showato. Gunto are Army Swords. Gendaito means swords made since the Meiji Restoration between 1868 and now. 1 Quote

Brian Posted February 7, 2023 Report Posted February 7, 2023 It's been happening for a long time now. Seen quite a few on the forum. No change of legal policy, I think it's a combination of them loosening the evaluations a bit, along with maybe favours depending on who is submitting. Quote

There has even been a Mantetsu papered, the discussion can probably be found on NMB with good search skills. The thought has turned to include blades of noteworthy historical value, regardless of manufacturing methods. Quote

rematron Posted February 7, 2023 Report Posted February 7, 2023 It's a little bit of a "All Scotch is whiskey but not all whiskey is Scotch" kind of thing? 1 1 Quote
