GoldenDrachen Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 Hi everyone! I am looking at the purchase of my first tsuba. I am interested in this particular one offered for sale. My questions are: 1. Is everything ok with this one? work and signature? 2. Might be a silly question: What is the realistic price of that piece? - I understand that some items cost as much as a person wishes to pay for it, but often collectible items have a very definite price tag. Thank you in advance Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 【刀剣ワールド】寒山拾得図鍔 銘 常重 (touken-world.jp) There's one to compare it against. This one has perhaps more similarities. 鍾馗図鐔 常重 Tsuneshige Tsuba - 鐔鑑賞記 by Zenzai (goo.ne.jp) Quote

Does the place of signature matter? To me, the way the mei is made, quite similar. I mean chisel strokes. Or am I wrong? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 I think you are looking critically in the right kind of way. Quote
Kurikata Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 Hi, You can google "tsuneshige 常重 tsuba" and compare. This tsuba looks fine to me! Quote

Grey Doffin Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 Except for very late pieces (late Edo, Meiji, and later), there should be little or none of the design on the seppa dai. Late pieces were made as art or to sell to western tourists, not as a functional part of the sword. This makes the tsuba in question less desirable in my eyes. Grey 7 Quote
Stephen Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 That said it had been mounted By the shadow of a seppa. I like it very much. 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 26, 2023 Report Posted January 26, 2023 Wow if this is your first tsuba purchase you have luck on your side and good taste! There would be plenty of people waiting to be second inline if you don't want it. 1 1 Quote
1kinko Posted January 27, 2023 Report Posted January 27, 2023 It depends on the price. The face is not very convincingly modeled to show any emotion, the beard isn’t at all realistic, and the vertical post on the back side isn’t vertical. I don’t know your budget but I’d save my money and look around some more. 3 2 Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 28, 2023 Report Posted January 28, 2023 There are three in the Metropolitan Museum of Art No. 91.1.784 - 91.1.803 - 2008.465 All signed Tsuneshige. Quote
GoldenDrachen Posted January 29, 2023 Author Report Posted January 29, 2023 Thank you all guys for the input. I didn't take this one. Considering all advices, I have skipped. Just for the information, this one was sold at the auction in Germany for 570€ this is the hammer price. Final price will be around €720. 2 Quote
