Butch Posted December 8, 2021 Report Posted December 8, 2021 My latest sword is a Type 3 Gendaito blade signed I believe by AKIHISA. The fiitings are in good order with a mon attached. Having checked the blade there are no evidence of any markings only what’s on the tang. The saya is flat black lacquer on a wood sayer with a matching to fittings bottom chap. Many thanks Gareth 2 3 Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted December 8, 2021 Report Posted December 8, 2021 Saya appears to have been made for a leather cover, based on the smooth surface paint and the haikan (ashi). Pretty unique and rare. Quote
Stephen Posted December 8, 2021 Report Posted December 8, 2021 Checking some the links hes very well regarded smith. May i ask the nagasa? Quote

PNSSHOGUN Posted December 8, 2021 Report Posted December 8, 2021 The Saya is a bit odd, can't ever recall seeing a Type 3 with a "combat" style saya like that. As Bruce suggests, this likely would have had a leather cover. Otherwise a great example, it is extremely uncommon to find Mon on this pattern of mounts. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 9, 2021 Report Posted December 9, 2021 This officer definitely had a individualist streak! But we've seen that with other gunto, too. Just the first one we've seen in RS fittings. Gareth, while anything is possible with gunto, I can assure you the haikan on this was meant for a leather cover. Rinji seishiki haikan look like this: Here is a photo of several styles of haikan made for leather-covered saya: 2 Quote
Stephen Posted December 9, 2021 Report Posted December 9, 2021 And his is very beefy ...meant for heavy use. So many nice touches this one has. I cant wait for him to send to me😉😎🥴 Lol Quote
george trotter Posted December 9, 2021 Report Posted December 9, 2021 Nice blade by Yamagami Akihisa of Niigata. Just for us WWII nerds (I mean Bruce and me) can you tell us if there is a stamp and number on the tip of the date side of the tang? Usually a 'matsu' kanji in a circle with a number. As this blade is dated sho 17/11 I think it should be numbered about 575 Also, does it have a star stamp on the top of the name side of tang. I have one by his elder brother. Regards, 2 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 9, 2021 Report Posted December 9, 2021 I second that request. I've checked all 5 of the Akihisa in my files and the numbers are at the end of the nakago (tang) on the dated side. 1 Quote
