Chishiki Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 Hi everyone. this just finished on yahoo and sold for 301,000¥. What intrigues me other than the price is that it has never been polished. Ok, the file marks are similar to that on the unpolished side of a kozuka, but both sides? Also the edge is dull as if never sharpened. Is there someone here who can read what the seller says about it please? Just a bit intrigued. Mark. PNSSHOGUN Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 Made by Kasama Ikkansai Shigetsugu I think. Quote
16k Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 You sure it’s not an oversized kozuka? Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 I believe it was made by Ikkansai Shigetoshi - 一貫斎繁寿 It is tiny tanto dated to 1905 and stating he was 68 when he made it - 明治三十八年二月日六十八翁作 , and I believe seller describes it never being polished. He also hints it might be among the last blades produced by the smith (if I understood that part correctly). I checked the smith died January 25th 1906 at the age of 69. 2 Quote
vajo Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 The horimo looks beautifull on that tiny blade. Will be the hell if someone want to polish it. Quote
Surfson Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 This looks like it has the potential to be a very nice piece. The horimono is very well done and it's a famous maker and school. I had a blade once that had never been polished. Rough filing and dull edge throughout. It was made in Hokkaido and there was a thread on it in 2014. I ended up selling it because I could not tell for the life of me whether it had ever been tempered. Here is a link: Since this tanto has a horimono, I would guess that it has been tempered, though I honestly don't know if horimono are only carved after yakiire, or if sometimes a horimono can be done first. I would presume that the heating and quenching would distort a horimono. Any information about that? Quote
DoTanuki yokai Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 I would say it was sold unfinished without polish and for unknown reason never saw a polisher. And if he found a flaw and stoped the work because of this i think it wouldnt be signed. Quote
