Bencld Posted September 20, 2017 Report Posted September 20, 2017 Hello all. Does this nakago look altered or messed about in your opinion. Hizen Kuni Ju Minamoto Masatsugu. Chris D. Quote
Shugyosha Posted September 20, 2017 Report Posted September 20, 2017 Looks like it has been thinned down on the nakago mune side to me. It would be hard to get the kanji that close to the edge without more metal to scribe on. Other than that, just a bit rough. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted September 20, 2017 Report Posted September 20, 2017 Shaved down to reduce weight I suppose. 1 Quote
takakage Posted September 20, 2017 Report Posted September 20, 2017 Hi, I don't know if this hizen Masatsugu is a pupil of shodai hizen Munetsugu ? But this masatsugu nakago looks like munetsugu nakago jiri. Quote
Stephen Posted September 20, 2017 Report Posted September 20, 2017 yes its been altered, weight ? new koshirae? i'm not sure 2 Quote
SAS Posted September 20, 2017 Report Posted September 20, 2017 Mune of nakago shaved down, anomalous scratches not oriented with file marks, freshness of mei .....could have been o-suriage based on height of mei to polished area and hint of hamon continuing past the machi. Interesting. Quote
Bencld Posted September 20, 2017 Author Report Posted September 20, 2017 Hi all. Thanks for the replies. The blade has TH papers and has a start price of AU$8500 ish with koshirae. In the blurb. Special feature: Generally speaking, Hizen blade and Masatsugu is different quality. This sword is first stage of the 2nd generation Hizen Munetsugu. The sword is engraved Uramei(nengo Meireki era on the tang). It is rare item sword which has Uramei on the back. The blade looks first generation Masahiro which is very active Gunome midare hamon. In Hamon, there are sunagashi, kinsuji work. Chris D. Quote
Darcy Posted September 20, 2017 Report Posted September 20, 2017 He signed fairly close to the mune but this one is definitely cut off. Quote
Chango Posted September 26, 2017 Report Posted September 26, 2017 I have a shinto blade that has been thinned down along the entire mune side of the blade (including the nakago), I wonder if it was a common-ish modification at some point, maybe to make the blade lighter and faster? Quote
SAS Posted September 26, 2017 Report Posted September 26, 2017 I suspect it has more to do with fitting koshirae than making it lighter or faster, as the amount of steel removed is minimal and would have little effect on handling. 2 Quote
Darcy Posted September 28, 2017 Report Posted September 28, 2017 Agreed, nothing to do with speed. It's how you make a square peg fit a round hole. Quote
