Jim P Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Hi Guys, A Late Muromachi odd tanto it looks like a cross between a Naginata/Yari in a Tanto, is this a one off ? thanks http://www.nipponto.co.jp/swords/KT119771.htm Quote
sanjuro Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Kikuchi yari. Some were remounted as tanto during the Edo period. Quote
Jim P Posted December 8, 2012 Author Report Posted December 8, 2012 thanks Keith, The shape is different from Kikuchi-yari norm,so was not 100% it was a yari, it also looks like a mei on the nakago. so is mekugi-ana the original ? Quote
Ian Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Hello gents It's a Lanmuri atoshi style Tanto I think. I hope this helps Regards Quote
Jim P Posted December 8, 2012 Author Report Posted December 8, 2012 Hi Ian, (Lanmuri Atoshi style Tanto, ) I think looks right, Thanks :D Quote
Marius Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 It is rather a "satsuma-age" tanto, I am sure there is no hamon in the mune, although someone has done a hazuya job on it. Fr this type of modification of a blade, see the bottom of this page: http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/suriage.html Quote
cabowen Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Hello gents It's a Lanmuri atoshi style Tanto I think. I hope this helps Regards Do you mean kanmuri otoshi? Quote
Ian Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Thank you Chris, what knowledge you have!. I'm going Aoi-art description from years past for the one below Lost in translation It is rather a "satsuma-age" tanto, I am sure there is no hamon in the mune, although someone has done a hazuya job on it. Fr this type of modification of a blade, see the bottom of this page: http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/suriage.html Hmmm to both Quote
Marius Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Retempered "Satsuma-age" or an oddball experiment with a new shape. I vote for the former. Any clues for retempering? Like dry nakago patina? Quote
muromachiman Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Yes indeed, it really is Odd shaped, I've never come across anything that looks like it. Cheers, Mike Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 I came across a very similarly-shaped blade at the Bizen-Osafune Sword Village: http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/9966/img2025f.jpg. It was by far my favorite item, was in excellent shape, & was made in the 1500s, according to the display sign. Ken Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 I saw some of these newly made for sale out of Japan somewhere, can't remember where though. John Quote
Ian Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 I have seen 5 so far, they can't be that rare! Quote
Jim P Posted December 9, 2012 Author Report Posted December 9, 2012 Ian, They listed it as a rare piece, it seems not so rare. They would be good for getting between the armor plates They also had some yatate (http://www.nipponto.co.jp/swords/KT122603.htm) (http://www.stutler.cc/pens/yatate/index.html) the site gets some odd things at times, but they had some interesting kit in the Late Muromachi. don't know how collectable they are. Thanks, :D Quote
Brian Posted December 9, 2012 Report Posted December 9, 2012 Could we find pics of 10 different ones at any time? Probably not..so I would call them rare. Nice shape..I wonder if all were from shortened blades or how many were made that way. Would probably make for a heck of a throwing weapon, although I am not suggesting that is what they were made for. Brian Quote
Ian Posted December 9, 2012 Report Posted December 9, 2012 Coming soon in for sale section ' very rare tanto' :D Quote
uwe Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 I doubt that it was made from an shortened blade. The mune goes obconic and ends to thick for a normal blade Uwe Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 I had to look up obconic, in geometry or design, the term can be assigned in an abstract manner to shapes in the natural or man-made world which show an inverted cone design. Is this what you mean? John Quote
uwe Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 Hi John, yes I mean this inverted cone shape. Sorry for my rusted English Cheers Uwe Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 Not rusted Uwe, just surprising. John Quote
Ian Posted December 12, 2012 Report Posted December 12, 2012 I doubt that it was made from an shortened blade. The mune goes obconic and ends to thick for a normal blade Uwe They are 14 mm thick Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted December 12, 2012 Report Posted December 12, 2012 It looks to me like a yoroi-doshi of a different (rarer) shape. KM Quote
Ian Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 It looks to me like a yoroi-doshi of a different (rarer) shape. I think this is the most probable Quote
