  1. Good to know - thanks Steven!
  2. FYI Bruce, I will be the new caretaker of the Kanetaka. Steven's deal was too good to pass up! It looks like great example of a Type 98, and it will soon be on display as the centerpiece of my collection. I feel fortunate to receive it - will be in good hands. At this point, I only collect Gunto and it will fit right in.
  3. Hi guys, who would you recommend for Tsuka repair and/or Ito wraps/re-wraps. Who are the vendors with good reputations? Any personal experiences? I've seen the "Fred Lohman" site, but don't know anything about their quality of work/reputation. P.S. Not looking for repairs or alterations on any of my existing guntos or those on the way to me - just want the info for future reference should I have the need.
  4. Nice looking Tang, by the way!
  5. When you say Tachi, you mean standard Gunto length (typical for a Type 98), correct? It's not a wakizashi, is it?
  6. RJT smith Koketsu Kanetaka?
  7. What is known of the smith? Seki? RJT? Ranking?
  8. I saw that yesterday. Someone paid nearly $1500.00 (probably more with tax and shipping) for a fake.
  9. Iijima, Tokyo First, Kokura. The last two numbers are not clear and are difficult for me to identify (on both blade and saya), but, as best as I can tell, the serial number is: 24908. The numbers on the blade and saya do appear to be matched. Don't tell me I have one of your old 95's Bruce. Lol!
  10. Here are some photos of my Type 95 with the black saya. In the first photo it is seen in a display with some of my collection where it contrasts well with the sayas of the other guntos. In the last photo the underlying (brown?) paint is visible where the semi-gloss black paint has worn off.
  11. Here's another example of a gold-painted saya. A 3rd version Type 95 up for auction on 7.17.21 on the invaluable site. https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/Japanese-nco-shin-gunto-1945-katana-sword-b7842eda09
  12. Thanks for the link Bruce!
  13. I noticed the saya was of the single hanger variety, uncommon for the Type 97, but examples exist. I know that with the post-war souvenir swords that resemble navy swords, a single hanger is something to take note of in distinguishing it from genuine Type 97's, along with other components and characteristics of the sword. The example here certainly appears as an authentic Type 97.
  14. Ah yes, the infamous "Monkey", The Samurai that is! "Very Rare", "Ancestral blade", "Special Pilot's sword", etc. He also has a YouTube channel - "Please visit my eBay store!". And his prices are completely out of the park! Hard to believe he's still around and sells anything. But, I suppose there's enough well-funded, unsuspecting newbies out there to sustain his business. Sad!
  15. This gunto, with Rinji-Seishiki mounts, is currently listed on the 'Bay. Looks really ugly! Is that old cosmoline on the blade? Not interested in purchasing, but I'm curious as to how one would go about making it more presentable - especially the blade. What would be the best way to clean a blade in this condition to make it more presentable? See photos in the link below. What do you guys think? https://www.ebay.com/itm/384202821706
  16. Guys, I just read a recent article that stated car break-in's in San Francisco have increased by over 750% since last year. "Smash and Grabs" can, and do, occur frequently in The City. Not trying to be a downer, just be extra cautious if you are driving in or have a rental car. It would be tragic to be a Smash and Grab victim, especially if you were to lose a valuable sword or other collectible pieces. Use common sense and situational awareness for sure!
  17. Would an IJN admiral have the standard dark brown navy tassel on their Type 97?
  18. In economic downturns, hard assets can be acquired for less. People sell, and will sell for less, when they feel financial pressure or stress. Currently, we've got significant inflation - the purchasing power of currencies is decreasing. Darker financial times are likely ahead. We could eventually see deflation in asset prices. To me it makes sense that there may be better deals ahead for knowledgeable and patient buyers. There may be more pressured, or desperate, sellers in the years ahead willing to sell for less.
  19. I'll add this to another episode of the NMB's "Fact or Fiction" show - from the invaluable auction site: https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/wwii-imperial-Japanese-nco-katana-sword-w-scabbard-7184f36b1c What do you guys think? I'm thinking it could be one of those Polish-made fake 95's that have been discussed here. To be fair, the seller does state "Unauthenticated" in the description.
  20. So, this is a blade made by a Seki smith named "Kanefuji"? And the blade would be machine-made or non-traditional (as over 90% of Seki blades were non-traditionally made)?
  21. Thanks for the additional information. The NMB crew are in detective mode and on a mission to prevent uninformed buyers from bad decisions. This is commendable!
  22. Another apparent Post-war souvenir sword that just sold on eBay. It was described as a Naval sword, but doesn't appear to be a true Type 97 Kai Gunto. Note the single hanger saya, the lack of sunburst style seppas, etc. At least the buyer didn't pay $2K for it. There's another one like it up for auction (paired with a Type 98) on Invaluable, currently. https://www.ebay.com/itm/255018150256?nma=true&si=55hPC0IF5TtGkTk6J7rhWqZnewc%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
  23. Thanks for the update. I was under the impression that it had sold.
  24. Thank you for the link to the YouTube channel for the Obon Society. Stories provide so much intrinsic value to this hobby we pursue - all the stories, including the ones told on this forum.
