    Tanto

Kita ware exposed? Not bad in my eyes but some collectors find it ugly. Tired from polishes Personally I can see past it and notice the hamon looking very nice.
  2. You have to admit that some eras were better than others? Not just the typical "Muromachi" "Edo" "Meiji", etc... but each little micro era. I just find it interesting how the changes in society also created change for sword techniques and style.
  3. WTF? I wonder how the buyer tested for sharpness? Or what he is thinking as a supposed collector of Nihonto? Since when is "sharpness" a thing in modern antique collecting? I mean, I could see if this was circa 1500 but today? This entire thing just makes me angry for some reason. I can picture that person showing off the sword to friends..."Hey check out the beautiful Sugata and the detailed Hada and Hamon. The forging is flawless! BUT IT'S NOT SHARP SO IT'S CRAP" Given, I must have gotten lucky because several Nihonto I have found in the past are O-Wazimono (or at the least really freaking sharp) but I wouldn't hate them if they weren't sharp. They're antiques, not modern swords meant for action. Please keep us informed on this and if the auction house tries giving you problems, contact me and I'll help you walk through it. I've been dealing with unruly buyers for many years now.
  4. In my dreams! I'm currently saving for a sword from either of those eras. A nice ubu Tachi or a Tanto but really it could be anything in old polish and decent shape. Truly what I want is too expensive. Yuhindo has some nice items lately. https://www.nihonto.com/tachi-by-ko-bizen-hironao-%E5%8F%A4%E5%82%99%E5%89%8D%E5%BC%98%E7%9B%B4100119/
  5. I agree. It's just weird that the last few swords seem to be in the Kanbun Era. It's to the point now where I can call it before I even see it so to speak.
  6. To be honest, lately I've been noticing allot of nice swords from Shin Shinto, also from WW2 era. Originally I would disregard them as too "new" but recently they seem to be growing on me!
  7. Hello all. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year's? So, I was reading through Wikipedia, going through the line of Era's in Japanese history and I started thinking. Which Era is your favorite? Not which we think is the "best" for sword making as that would likely be Kamakura, etc... but which Era do you tend to gravitate towards when looking for pieces? Its funny but I keep gravitating towards the Kanbun Era. I myself love Koto blades but I find the Kanbun Era to have allot of decent smiths with very attractive swords. Why is this? Lack of wars with more time to concentrate on arts? Kanbun Era also established the "Christian Courts" in villages to try and eradicate the spread of Christianity. Just a little tidbit of info haha So which Era do you prefer if any?
  8. It used to be only taxed from the state you're in but now i think eBay changed that because i get taxed no matter which state I buy from now which is annoying
  9. If it is Yakidashi, it points to Edo and I would tend to agree but could it be Momoyama? Either way, I would say early Edo if anything. It's a very nice blade and housed in beautiful fittings. A little expensive tho but very nice
  10. Very interesting. The Japanese made swords out of the gun from the battleship "Mikasa" which was damaged during the Russo Japan war in 1904.
  11. Seriously! Best thing to do is leave negative feedback and report the seller right away! Also, we can flag his listings. The more flags, the more likely he is to be blacklisted
  12. Last thing I read was he got the sword back from over seas but then nothing. I'm curious as to what happened as well
  13. Amazing! It's in very good condition as well, so please be careful on the methods you choose to clean. Honestly I would just wipe it down and oil. Monitor any problem areas until you can send it to a professional if you choose. As is you have a really amazing sword from a very interesting time in history!
  14. Why do you say this?
  15. Yeah, I was thinking same thing. Looks fairly well preserved with the usual patterns and colors we see from that era. Still pretty neat tho. I could imagine a customer walking in for a new Koshirae for their very first sword, or just a new Koshirae, debating if they could afford the next model up and haggling over prices.
  16. Well at least we now know Bushi had a sense of humor!
  17. I thought this was kinda cool. Gives some insight on how the craftsman shop might have been displayed. Edo period http://www.the-kura.com/items/1410008/Edo-period-Samurai-Sword-Scabbard-Sample-Collection
  18. Very nice! I love Koshirae! Im addicted to really early metal koshirae and the fact that they have survived intact and complete for so long. I dont see any issue with collecting and displaying

    Menuki advice

    Very nice!
  20. I cant remember when but Mark puts everything on sale once or twice a year for really low prices. Its definitely worth it. Keep an eye out
  21. Reminds me of Kotetsu... Its my work but not my signature, haha
  22. I've been lusting after that blade for a while now! I love it!
  23. Yep!
