Have often wondered about Nakago with these large chunks missing, was it fire damage, weight reduction, rust, a hitherto unknown rat species that feeds on Nakago....? The forerunner may be salt water corrosion as you see it on swords mounted for WWII where such exposure could be frequent. -
For what it's worth you sometimes see a similar overall composition of a Kitsune admiring its reflection under moonlight.

Have to agree with Jacques, even the very best photos pale to the real thing at these levels. Some dealers are doing videos which are a big improvement, certainly helpful for summary studying of a blade for research or Kantei practice. However it seems absolutely nuts to me spending that amount on a sword without being able to view it hand at leisure. -
Well that isn't a cavalry model, probably just the officers preference.

Appears to be a Murata-To, a non-traditional oil tempered blade that were common for Kyu Gunto.

There was a Maj. General Omoto Kimio - 尾本喜三雄, however he is listed as being stationed in Sumatra by wars end. Looks like some interesting provenance, thanks for sharing Geoff.

Hi David, unfortunately this appears to be a Chinese fake. The style of the handle wrap, fittings, and tang, are all wrong and rather crude.

Agree with Brian, total scam that adds non-existent tax and fees to items that don't require them. Also forget buying swords using the GSP, they aren't accepted and have heard stories of the item being seized, money refunded, and sword summarily 'destroyed'.

For any real insight to the Japanese officer you will need to further research your grandfathers service history.

That style looks close to his Enpo period Mei, the shape of the Nakago-jiri changed over the years as well. Worth having this looked at professionally.

It would more likely be from the Edo period, difficult to say anymore with the photos provided. The Nakago may have been re-patinated to give it more age.

Nice find Eric, it has some good signs of being a Type 94. Are you able to share a photo of the Mei?
