It's very possible that 中 mark may indicate the Midsize for Tsuka, it looks has smaller space for the tang than the usual ones. ホ(Ho) is Army Arsenal Kokura First Factory inspection mark(小倉陸軍造兵廠第一製造所廠検査印).

Inquiry - Type 95 Copper Shin Gunto?

Seems that Screw called differently on Type 95 and Type 98? It called 鳩目On Type 98,目釘(猿手受兼用)on Type 95.Maybe because of 目釘 go through the tang 鳩目 doesn't? PS:The collectors in China call that screw 大目釘 or 尾部目釘(尾部螺絲)for Type 95.

Must be a wrong typo, should be 臣 instead of 巨。Guy is right,Japanese 義臣 should be YOSHIOMI,I was making a mistake to YOSHIMASA. -

That fixe of the end of the tang can be buff and make it look better than now

Where is the Mekugi hole in the middle if it's 造兵刀 Tang?
-
Your sword looks like 軍属刀(Army civilian employee sword). This style of Gunto shows up all the time, nothing special about the fitting(wood saya with leather cover), unless the blade is special. later war NCOs allow using their family blade due to the shortage of Arsenal issue NCO sword. Your sword may be one of those. http://ohmura-study.net/728.html

Bruce IJA use 曹長 Sergeant Major 軍曹 Sergeant 伍長Corporal, those guys normally wearing NCO sword. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranks_of_the_Imperial_Japanese_Army IJN use 一等兵曹 Petty officer first class 二等兵曹 Petty officer second class 三等兵曹 Petty officer third class https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranks_of_the_Imperial_Japanese_Navy

Rank is 軍曹 Sergeant。It dose have kanji 水上 ,it could be name of place or like what you think-Navy.
-
Bruce I agree with you ,this is original copper handle NCO sword tang for sure.Maybe field repair instead of factory repair though, who knows.
-
Tang from another sword with NO mekugi hole? Not likely.
-
-
Not put together but original with unmatched scabbard, maybe blade was cleaned. The fix of the end of the tang is the reason we saw some copper handle NCO and later NCO added a second mekugi hole on the tang.

Inquiry - Type 95 Copper Shin Gunto?
BANGBANGSAN replied to Infinite_Wisdumb's topic in Military Swords of Japan
It's kind of hard to find Nco Sarute .You might use the wire Sarute for Type 98 if you can't find one for type 95. -
I‘m going to buy a copy

It looks like 濃州住良光鍛之

Yes, it's a little confusing, Both 俊光and敏光 pronouncing Toshimitsu.
