  1. OK -- out on a limb and IMHO as a learning experience the two chisel marks inside bottom of kuni are angled differently and the end of the right vertical is missing the tag on the bottom -- Gimei ?
  2. If it is still for sale - I'd pass - the photos indicate a very badly treated blade and a taped up saya - if not and you own it I am not even sure I would spend the money to open a window on a mumei wak looking this battered
  3. A treatise on "The psychological basis of purchases on E-bay' by the Nihonto Message Board
  4. I wouldn't want to call it either way

    Lacquered Tsuba

I cant imagine if it was placed in a bath of 50% lacquer thinner and 50% alcohol it could damage the iron. Boiling water with baking soda will also loosen it up and you can clean it off with the acetone, for a more gentle removal
  6. Stephen: Didn't think there were orange ones = red/brown - officers major/colonel ?> heres a pic of one I found and this is called "red/brown" - certainly on the orange side of the color spectrum
  7. Almost brought a tear to my eye Barry but very well said and how true - brothers from different mothers
  8. No doubt of the group message at all and I think folks just stating the obvious rather than really making fun of the writers interest in something like this.
  9. How much does it weigh?? The silver alone must be worth a fair amount
  10. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/l ... ashi-tsuba Heres are 4 that were up for auction for comparison
  11. John: I got on no problem from PEI - there must be something in the address that your firewall or virus software is blocking -
  12. Have heard MANY variations from not at all to next day. I believe that EMS won't take so it has to go "surface mail" eg "on slow boat from Japan" OR Fed ex for a couple of hundred dollars minimum
  13. I wonder what the provenance of this might be - I mean where would he manage to acquire this to sell on e-bay or anywhere else for that matter?
  14. Dan: SEARCH the forum - he has been around as long as most people buying nihonto and seems to be able to get e-mails for new members so - you have arrived
  15. I have several of those as well
  16. YES INDEED
  17. Grey: Thanks for the pic! That is quite a piece, and is there any chance it may have been shortened or altered in some way based on the tang - what is the length please?
  18. IMHO it is genuine but it looks like someone took a wire brush or something similar to the nakago - not filed - just buffed. Would take the top off the mei and the blade looks fine but again - only my take on it
  19. Afraid it is not looking good but would encourage you to take it to where you stated that you could get an expert opinion. The steel on the blade doesnt look any better than the signature on the tang.

    genuine nakago?

Doesn't mean it cant be done there is a failry definitive "line" on the nakago - welding and tang repatination is an art as well as a science.
  21. Well I can't help you Grey but would love to see the entire blade if you can wrangle a picture
  22. Is old chinese junk - that is antique chinese junk = Junque?
  23. May 2011 be the best yet for all
  24. JIm: As others have said really tough call without blade in hand but do you think it is or not - it seems that you are having a debate with yourself. I think it is suriage, possibly mumei originally or o-suriage and the mei gone, but ?
