  1. Stephen, as you can see designs can be very similar. Generally 'mass production' means, in this instance, particular models were produced in multiples by hand. There are very late cast copies with little hand work made for the western market...that is not the case here. Cheers, -S-

    Alloy Blend?

Hi John, It is a gilt, copper based alloy (brass/bronze), the alloy itself is simply a base for the gilding....it has no precious metal content. The workmanship of the piece is not of a particularly distinguished quality. -S-
  4. Or seashells.....who knows, could be a good investment! Maybe, if your lucky, you could parlay them into an oil company in the future. Stranger things have happened. -S-
  5. One has to make do with something when they run out of Unicorn pelts. -S-
  6. Hi Stephen, As Chris mentioned the original patination is gone, whether from rubbing or cleaning. On close examination of the Karashishi, it looks as if it was originally patinated... as evidenced by the remaining gold dots. Cheers, -S-
  7. Concentrate on what you are buying, and not the circumstances (few of us are 'Sightholders'). Understanding your rung on the 'ladder' will lead to sounder decisions......no matter the state of the broader market. The price of Vicuña means little to the buyer of Polyester, or vice versa. -S-

    New Tanto

Hi David, Nice looking blade! As for how to take better photos, your on the right track in dealing with B&H. I've always found them knowledgeable and obliging, discuss what your trying to achieve and they will help you make the best choice....not the most expensive one. Rarely do you find merchants, these days, that put your needs before profit. Best of luck, -S-

  10. Welcome Manny, It's not unusual to see these pieces sporting a Tsuba that had personal meaning(a family heirloom, etc.) for the owner. Cheers, -S-

  13. This ceased being amusing, or of any real interest quite a while back.....time to put it to rest. -S-
  14. Thanks Piers, Fort Knox, that was fast, what were you driving...the Batmobile? "Gee whiz" -S-
  15. More pics, measurements, why? Should we now delve deeper into this scatological pursuit.....to what end? -S-
  16. Those are very nice Piers! I'm with you, I also like a bit of this and that, nothing duller than eating the same thing day after day....why limit yourself. Sorry to be a pest, could you please state the approx. length of the center coin for a scale reference? Cheers, -S-

  19. No doubt, one of the last opportunities to purchase items from a collection assembled by one ot the 'old guard'. Looks like an interesting sale with quite conservative estimates, checked out the galleries website....appears to be a very nicely organized operation, worth looking in on from time to time. Cheers, -S-
  20. Hearn is my favorite from the group of later 19th century European authors who wrote of Japan. His retellings of the old tales and stories of Japan are filled with charm, and a sense of wonder that make his writings particularly endearing. Very enjoyable reading. Thanks Peter, for introducing him to the new generations of collectors. -S-
  21. And it's a fine one to have, just look at that face! -S-
  22. Great bunnies Jeremiah, they're loaded with personality! What a terrific addition to the rabbit collection, love em. Cheers, -S-
  23. A traditionally made habaki is work-hardened, a cast one, or 3D printed one is not, it will not function properly. If you are simply looking for a spacer you may as well try converting an existing one....the aesthetics are likely to be better as well. -S-
  24. Patrice, Not honoring deals here is very unwise, this is a tight community.......bad news travels fast! -S-
  25. You've made my point, that and a myriad of other reasons are why I hate PayPay, there are many other options we should all be using. -S-
