I believe its just a artesians way of keeping all items going on the sword together...like stocking numbers...there is no real big significance for the writing.

and Uchiko powder is what i use, some might poo poo the uchiko as to abrasive, i use a lightly oiled cloth to remove whit out any pressure. works for me.
