WW2 Sword Posted Thursday at 07:35 AM Report Posted Thursday at 07:35 AM I recently acquired this sword from my son’s friend, who told me it was his grandfather’s sword from WW2. I would love to know exactly what I have and possibly learn some of the history of it. I have uploaded some pictures and research that I have found, not sure if it’s correct or not. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted Thursday at 08:02 AM Report Posted Thursday at 08:02 AM Don’t have time to look at everything in detail but the inscription does not inspire confidence. 木元武夫 Kimoto Takeo is wrong for a swordsmith name. 元和 七年 is read Genna 7, toward the beginning of the Edo Period. 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted Thursday at 11:51 AM Report Posted Thursday at 11:51 AM One single photo would have been largely sufficient to identify this as non-Japanese, and certainly not 80 years old. Sorry. 3 1 Quote
John C Posted Thursday at 09:54 PM Report Posted Thursday at 09:54 PM Chatgpt was incorrect when it identified the sword as WW2. John C. Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted Friday at 07:19 PM Report Posted Friday at 07:19 PM An immediate give-away (there are plenty others) is the angle of the blade tip. The Chinese do this with blades, the Japanese don't I THINK I saw a tanto, years ago, with this shape, but it's the only time I've seen one in all my years. On the other hand, 90% of the fakes that come through here have this shape. 3 Quote

I would worry more about robots as was posted in some sources https://www.cnet.com/tech/amazons-big-holiday-plan-replacing-600000-human-workers-with-robots-a-new-report-says/ (New York Times have same article) and competition will follow to be able to compete. Hector Posted Saturday at 01:15 PM Report Posted Saturday at 01:15 PM Please don't be offended at the directness of some of these replies, Glen - it's just the style of this forum and these are all good guys. The trouble is these obvious Chinese fakes show up on here every week, often with an accompanying story claiming some provenance from WW2. If you were given this sword by your son's friend, I'd advise keeping quiet and accept it as a well intended gift. If, however, you spent good money on it, I would consider having a word about getting reimbursed. Best, Hector 4 Quote
