As one of said sheep I didn't know enough to be buying. However when buying on ebay if I don't know enough about the subject matter I go straight to peoples comments about the seller. Over the years it's proven to be a pretty good anti-fleecing device. *shrug* Just didn't work this time. That's life. Still annoying though.

You will see that for the huge amount of items he sells damyou has a good rating...I have always believed that a large amount of the fake and replica items sold by him are purchased by people who know what they are buying and they intend to resell the items themselves...they will have his description in hand which does not say outright what the item is and to the unaware it looks like the item was purchased from a legit dealer...there are probably antique stores, gun and knife shows etc all over the world with damyou yari etc for sale.

Sorry for raising such an old topic but I was wondering what's the current perception on the seller daimyou54eb ?

Mostly sells junk and trash, but the occasional decent item slips through...

Thank you Peter :)

How about fakes? I was looking to buy from him some cheap fittings but don't want to end up with Chinese 0.2$ seppas instead of the advertised EDO ones.

I have been burned by him twice. One pair of menuki were new. I emailed and finally got permission to return them. "They never arrived". Second time a yari turned out to be new as well. If I see his name on an item I do not read further.

"Little old" means not old at all = fake = modern.

That is how they describe items. If it is old, they will say it is Edo.

Yup, I figured that out. :)

Question is what are the chances that an item described as "Edo" is actually "little old"? It was the overinflated shipping cost for small items that made me cautious: if something sells for $10 but the shipping cost is listed at $25 (for an item under 50g) even if you return the item you're going to lose most of the money paid.

I hate to admit it but one of the katanas I bought from him (though gimei) was described as edo. It was actually a lot older than that and is my pride and joy. Covered with utsuri, well made and yes, tired it's still the best piece I ever got. He's not selling anymore. Someone took over his name, but if you wait and watch carefully you just might find a treasure for cheap. That being said. BE CAREFUL!

I buy from him every now and then, and generaly have been happy with what I got!

Check the description, Edo, Old and Little Old which he defines quite clearly. Pay by Paypal and if you have a problem, "not as described", use their "reconciliation" service..... no one selling on Ebay wants to get a ban, and Ebay and Paypal do ban persistent offenders. I got a dodgy Tsuba off a different vendor, and a mere mention of using Ebay's complaint system got my money back and a message to not bother returning the Tsuba.

Check the picture, I bought a tsuba off him, described as iron but clearly copper in the pictures and yes when it arrived it was copper..... English is not his first language!

For small items ask if he can send it "Small Parcel-SAL", not tracked or insured but averages $12 rather than $30!

Always remember he is a Dealer making a living by selling this stuff, not a collector and not an altruist.

Interesting perceptions on daimyou54eb. I've dealt with Takako-san for several years, & have never had a single problem. One item broke in transit, & he sent me a refund even before I had packaged up the item to return to him, at his expense. My mentor also buys from him, & is happy to do so.

Not really. Both were the same company.

The man who was in charge of Ebay changed. Mrs.Takako Shimatani does all sales now.

She is very pleasant to work with. And as long as you know that the stuff they sell is not at all top level or sometimes replica there is no caveat emptor.

The only problem I have with the company are the shipping costs, but then again when you write a polite letter in Japanese you always get a quick answer and they are more than willing to help out.
