Scogg Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 I understand this one might not be legible… Even if getting a translation is a long shot, I figure it can’t hurt to try. It’s very small, and located on a type 98 gunto tsuka. Sincerely, -Sam Quote
uwe Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 Right side looks like “十五号”. Can’t make out the second character, marked in red… 1 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 Maybe X-西 (Nishi) on the left? Can’t work out the first character… 1 Quote
Scogg Posted September 2 Author Report Posted September 2 Thank you Piers and Uwe! Much appreciated. While I still cannot make sense of it, it's interesting nonetheless! And good to know. Speculation: Maybe some kind of assembly system for the fittings, like i've seen on some other gunto Sincerely, -Sam Quote
kissakai Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 If it was for assy I'd expect just a number Quote
uwe Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 Right side we have “10” “?” and “gou” (号 = number, edition, make, model, issue, part of that group)…So it can well be for assembly?! 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 These are usually numbers, type of mon, Tsuka Ito style, or owners surname. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 3 Report Posted September 3 The 10 5 in kanji on the right match the 10 (>) 5 (\) in modified Roman numerals on the left. All I can say. 2 Quote
Scogg Posted September 3 Author Report Posted September 3 Those hash marks, the modified Roman numerals, are repeated on the seppa and tsuba. I had figured those to be the “assembly numbers”, and was hoping for a surname in the writing. Thank you everyone for the input! This is turning out to be an interesting gunto. Sincerely, -Sam 1 Quote
