Just came across this odd looking nakago on a nagamichi katana.

Does anyone have any idea why they would weld on an extra piece of nakago to original one? It's like the opposite of a suriage nakago.

Recall similar additions (papered) to reinforce the Nakago of O-Suriage swords or for use as Kinno-To, one may have been a removable sleeve. A study of broken sword during operations in Manchuria found that a common failure was the Tsuka breaking due to short Nakago in long Tsuka, this would've been no different in the Samurai age.

One explanation I could think of would be that it was mounted as NAGAMAKI. As mentioned above by John, a very long TSUKA with a short NAKAGO is likely to break in battle.

The seller says alongside ‘Nakago’:

付け足し茎

Tsuke-ashi Nakago

= added-leg tang

(Nothing otherwise)

付け足し茎 reads Tsuketashi Nakago ( Extended or added tang).

足し (tashi) does not mean leg in this context.

Alex,

this alteration would not have been done in a day or three. Think of making not only the NAKAGO extension, but also a new TSUKA!

Looking at the picture of the koshirae, quite surprised. The reason being i expected the tsuka to be longer.

The thought i am having now is the sword nakago/reach was simply too short for a new owner, so had it amended.

The only thing that gives it aways when the tsuka is on is the habaki, otherwise you would just assume its a regular sword.

Think the image above really exaggerates.
