Gerry Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 Just came across this odd looking nakago on a nagamichi katana. Does anyone have any idea why they would weld on an extra piece of nakago to original one? It's like the opposite of a suriage nakago. 5 Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 I'll leap in to start the proverbial in motion. Might it involve remounting the blade as a Nagamaki? 2 Quote
Rawa Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 Maybe its pricing was based on weight? Here you go mine abomination. 2 Quote
Lewis B Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 Fascinating modification whatever the purpose. The conversion to nagamaki sounds highly plausible. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 Recall similar additions (papered) to reinforce the Nakago of O-Suriage swords or for use as Kinno-To, one may have been a removable sleeve. A study of broken sword during operations in Manchuria found that a common failure was the Tsuka breaking due to short Nakago in long Tsuka, this would've been no different in the Samurai age. 3 Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted July 20 Report Posted July 20 Here is the link to this particular sword. https://www.e-sword.jp/katana/2510-1062.htm In person I have only seen one ōdachi that has had nakago extension, and it was performed in slightly different manner but much more smoothly than this. I think the extension in the linked sword seems quite crude fix. 3 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 21 Report Posted July 21 One explanation I could think of would be that it was mounted as NAGAMAKI. As mentioned above by John, a very long TSUKA with a short NAKAGO is likely to break in battle. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted July 21 Report Posted July 21 The seller says alongside ‘Nakago’: 付け足し茎 Tsuke-ashi Nakago = added-leg tang (Nothing otherwise) 1 Quote
Nobody Posted July 21 Report Posted July 21 3 hours ago, Bugyotsuji said: The seller says alongside ‘Nakago’: 付け足し茎 Tsuke-ashi Nakago = added-leg tang (Nothing otherwise) 付け足し茎 reads Tsuketashi Nakago ( Extended or added tang). 足し (tashi) does not mean leg in this context. 2 1 Quote
Brian Posted July 22 Report Posted July 22 Is this not something that was added to aid in cutting tests? Quote
Alex A Posted July 22 Report Posted July 22 Maybe someone seeking an advantage the day before the duel. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 22 Report Posted July 22 Alex, this alteration would not have been done in a day or three. Think of making not only the NAKAGO extension, but also a new TSUKA! Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted July 22 Report Posted July 22 Maybe the proposed Tsuka already had a deep and wide slot in it. Quote
Alex A Posted July 22 Report Posted July 22 Looking at the picture of the koshirae, quite surprised. The reason being i expected the tsuka to be longer. The thought i am having now is the sword nakago/reach was simply too short for a new owner, so had it amended. The only thing that gives it aways when the tsuka is on is the habaki, otherwise you would just assume its a regular sword. Think the image above really exaggerates. Quote
