Gunome Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Hi, Nice idea this post ! Or anybody else care to post a problem tsuba? So what do you think of this one ? Sebastien Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Sebastien, Saw your post and then did my search on ebay and came up with this tsuba: http://cgi.ebay.com/CAS-Hanwei-Bamboo-Iron-Tsuba-For-Samurai-Katana-Sword_W0QQitemZ170454185942QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item27afdc77d6 By the same maker, possibly? The granularity of the steel would be a give away for me. Grey Quote
Gunome Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Hi Greg, It is not a moderne one, but an edo period tsuba (7.9cm diameter) that's my pictures that aren't so good. But you could enlarge it by a click on it. Please see carefully the last one, that's the matter on this tsuba. Sebastien Quote
Stephen Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 So what do you think of this one better get it to the doctor, its got crabs. sorry bit under the weather and it cheered me up.....now back to your kantei Quote

But you could enlarge it by a click on it. Please see carefully the last one, that's the matter on this tsuba. Sebastien It is bent. So what? I would leave it as it is. Not a fatal flaw (at least that is what I think). I have bought a late Akasaka tsuba which was slightly bent and I have never regretted it. Maybe the NMB experts would like to elaborate? Quote
dirk marshall Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 I believe this is a cleaned fire scale tsuba Quote
dirk marshall Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 cast tsuba strange metal patinates as touched still not good Quote
Jean Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Often unsigned Kinko tsuba are difficult to kantei. One should be submitted to shinsa, the other three are identified (Schools) - some are known by Ford and others - Here are four tsuba to kantei from left to right Quote
Aloof Pegasus Posted March 4, 2010 Author Report Posted March 4, 2010 Hi Jean Have these 4 all got some major problem? Asking because they all look so nice. Should we give an attribution or for example has one been repatinated, another is modern? Thanks Philip Quote
Stephen Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 I had a friend once who bought off a old vet a blade that he had chromed, tsuba also. When my friend took them to be dipped to take off the chrome the patina was removed too. The tsuba looked much like yours Dirk. Quote

Good point, i collect russo mounts and have had a series of nickle scabbards redone and forgot about that. I always wondered how the soft metal could have remained intact in a fire. Your explanation has a ring of truth. thanks Dirk Quote
