Misconstrued Posted June 24, 2022 Report Posted June 24, 2022 I found a photo on the internet of what appears to be some confiscated swords from WW2. I can't make out what most of the swords are, but look at that giant katana (Tachi?) he's holding! Hopefully it wasn't destroyed like many others sadly were. 3 Quote
vajo Posted June 24, 2022 Report Posted June 24, 2022 I think that was a very small soldier Look at the swords in front of him. All giant. 1 Quote
Matsunoki Posted June 25, 2022 Report Posted June 25, 2022 Somewhere (can’t find it now) I’ve seen a photo of hundreds of swords being run over by a tank. Thankfully Cadwell had an open mind and a lot of compassion or it could have been so much worse. 1 Quote
vajo Posted June 26, 2022 Report Posted June 26, 2022 "Gassenhauer". Piers the sword in the initial photo. Look on the tsuka. The hands of the soldier are so tiny. He could not grab around the tsuka. The picture from the odachi had a correct tsuka for a normal tall man. I bet some beer that the soldier is not taller than 152 cm. I think he is much smaller and they made a fun picture with the swords. 2 Quote
Okan Posted July 4, 2022 Report Posted July 4, 2022 Yup..very small soldier holding a Katana. I don't think it's a tachi. That motohaba is at least 3.2cm. I bet it's a Gendaito. Kanenaga maybe..Kanefusa? Hmm..I think I want to find it. (if it's not destroyed) 1 Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted July 4, 2022 Report Posted July 4, 2022 I believe it is a large sword he is holding and the man is "average" sized. I would think they took out the largest most impressive pieces out of those piles. I believe the saya of the sword he is holding is almost the size of total length of typical gunto in koshirae. 3 Quote

Hey there Jussi...I've used picture of a regular 64cm katana in shirasaya and scaled it to match what he's holding..So what he holds is pretty much average size Katana. 1 1 Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted July 4, 2022 Report Posted July 4, 2022 I think the sword bit further down is a regular sized gunto so I copied it next to the saya. I do not have the best eyesight and the pic is bit blurry but seeing how large the saya + long and wide the blade is I cannot see this as an average length sword. 2 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 5, 2022 Report Posted July 5, 2022 My feeling is with Jussi, as the swords on the ground and normal sized. If the tall item standing on his left is the saya to the sword in hand, it is much longer/taller than the other one next to it. Of course, it could be both - short guy, longer than normal sword. 1 Quote

Hi Okan…..how did you know the correct scale to use? Can’t see how you could scale it without knowing the size of the sword he was holding. I’m puzzled!!! Have you just made the 64 cm sword the same size as the one he is holding? 1 Quote
Okan Posted July 5, 2022 Report Posted July 5, 2022 Ok..same sergeant...same sword? So it's either two small soldiers or..just kidding..huge sword.. @Jussi Ekholm @Bruce Pennington 1 2 Quote
Matsunoki Posted July 6, 2022 Report Posted July 6, 2022 Interesting…..I think maybe this photo was staged for “publicity”. Trying to shift a pile of swords with a shovel would more than likely end up with the man wielding the shovel getting badly injured…….sharp blades falling from saya etc. Would have been quicker to pick them up! vajo Posted July 6, 2022 Report Posted July 6, 2022 Great picture Okan. I see now that is a really huge sword. 1 Quote

oneshot onekill Posted July 6, 2022 Report Posted July 6, 2022 I think the original picture is a huge sword because you can see a door behind the man and the piled up swords and proportionately compared to that door and the position of the hinge on the right side he looks to be over 5' tall but under 6'. 1 Quote
