It's on a koto naginata naoshi which has quite a diamond shaped cross section, and polished quite a lot, so I think it's just a bit of a crude attempt at getting it to fit a bit better 1 1 Quote

A little photo of a small bit of progress, still have alot more practicing to do, the intention was to add to one of the habaki I have made, but decided it's much quicker to make seppa to try out different techniques. Cut from 0.5mm copper, carved by hand.....still and always will be learning Not happy with the nakago-ana, bad cutting out........but means I have to make more. It is good that you want to try your hands on that craft, but please learn from genuine Japanese items and watch Ford Hallam's videos to see how they are actually made. Part of learning in Japanese crafts is watching patiently how things are looking and how they are traditionally made. The dimensions of the material are as important as the functionality. A SEPPA has a certain purpose which should be pursued. It should absolutely have a plain even surface, so no moisture can be trapped under the TSUBA and possibly damage the metal or the wooden TSUKA core. The MIMI (= rim) might well have a tiny decoration which will not interfere with its purpose. Quote

But as Japanese crafts and arts are so highly developed, it is important to observe and analyse what and how they did it unless you have a master to teach you. The first step is always looking and watching, the second step is practicing with the correct tools and methods, and then comparing one's own results with what was made by genuine craftsmen. Just banging on metal will not lead very far. Quote
