remzy Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Greetings, i have but a simple question. It is understood that nihontos should be stored horizontaly to avoid messing the scabbard with oil etc. but is there any gun safes manufacturer that make their safes horizontal? Im looking for a movable-when-needed safe so this is why a gun safe came to mind. Id appreciate any info you might have regarding potential providers, i might have to look at a sporting shop for a gun safe and put it horizontaly but i dont know how conveniant it will be to deal with. Regards, Remy Quote

Rich S Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Remzy - While the thing about oil standing swords vertaically is somewhat true, really only applies is they are heavily/overly oiled. I've stored mine vertically in a gun safe for 30 years with no problems. Rich S Quote
John A Stuart Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Likewise, very light oil film and in my safe vertically when at sea. No harm yet, but it hasn't been 30 yrs either. John Quote

Regards, Remy Remy, you have but a simple question? It's difficult to answer such a convoluted question simply! Some saya have a little chamber built into the bottom for collecting the oil, which suggests that swords were, at some time anyway, able to be stored vertically. (Possibly only temporarily while the sword was in koshirae, I wonder?) Most sword storage cases that I've seen in Japan have been horizontal, ranging from ordinary or custom-built drawers in an ordinary chest, thru bespoke wooden katana cases with a simple lock, to a massive combination safe built into the wall. What you want is a horizontal, thief-proof, but portable in case of fire, gun locker, available locally, right? Quote
Nobody Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 It is understood that nihontos should be stored horizontaly to avoid messing the scabbard with oil etc. Why don’t you store nihonto vertically like this position to avoid messing the scabbard with oil etc? Quote
remzy Posted June 14, 2008 Author Report Posted June 14, 2008 Well guys, you convinced me to get a normal gun case... and i must say that i feel alot safer with my nihontos in it now. Yep, best two hundred something bucks i ever invested to have confidence, now i can sleep on my two ears instead of on my two nihontos! Quote
