John A Stuart Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 It is vintage though. Kind of worth 70 bucks just for the coffee table. John Quote
Hermes Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Vintage 2008 made in China is my guess, i noticed more and more being sold in Japan like it now, made in the same factory for $2 a day labor i would say, but then again, the workers can live in the factory itself, how nice of the owners. My question to the seller would be, old like in fly years? James Quote

Guido Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 In the late nineties a Chinese colleague in Beijing showed me his new lighter in the shape of a mermaid, made of bronze with a coat of clear lacquer. When you pulled back her head, a flame came out of the throat, the nipples (made of red LED's) started blinking, and the communist song "The East Is Red" was played. While I was at a loss of words - looking for a comment that wasn't outright insulting - a German colleague joined us and said: "Well, whatever you might think of the Chinese, they got great taste!", turned around, and left me to deal with laughter that was trying to get out of me like the cork from a champagne bottle. This Tsuba is even worse, but not half as funny. Quote
drbvac Posted April 30, 2008 Author Report Posted April 30, 2008 Thanks for all the information and based on your vast knowledge and comments I think I will simlpy have to buy this work of art . I figure it is by Art Chan from Shanghai circa 05. Quote
Bob M. Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Amateur work from Japan ? From a topic posted before you signed up - sorry if you've already seen it... Thought to be a fantasy piece from the 1960s/70s - good fun when shown in it's box, bridge side up.... Must get around to photographing/posting a few more tsuba . Regards Bob M. Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 Actually I think it is just another form of chunga. Lots of okimono have erotic themes, that would be quite shocking for the Victorians and secretly stimulating, though these of course are much later. John Quote
Bungo Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 while " Chinese bashing " seems to be in voque, let's not forget there are a few Chinese/Asian members on this list . In different races/nationalities there'll always be " weirdo".......like that Austian dude who did the nasties to his own kid. So let's cool it. Thank you milt Quote

So let's cool it. Thank you milt I *knew* it ... Actually I wrote a kind of disclaimer after my lighter story, but then decided to erase those lines because it sounded kind of silly. Obviously one can't be silly enough in praying to the almighty God of political correctness . Quote
Brian Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 My boss is Chinese, as are some of my friends, so I'll just say point taken Milt...and I know the comments were directed at the products and not at the nation. We'll be more careful though. Brian Quote
