Ed Hicks Posted September 25, 2016 Report Posted September 25, 2016 Sukemitsu NTHK-NPO Kanteisho Paper Translation Help Needed...Translation needed for the main points. What is the red seal on the right side? I have posted a paper of another sword without that seal for comparison. Thanks for looking and for assistance. Ed Quote
SteveM Posted September 25, 2016 Report Posted September 25, 2016 Hello Ed You mean Katsumitsu, right? I'll get you started - the first full column (right side) is for the mei, and it reads 備前国長船二郎左衛門尉勝光 文亀二年二月吉日 Bizen no kuni, Osafune, Jirōsaemon-no-jyō Katsumitu Bunki 2 (1502), February, auspicious day The red square seal is the seal of the NTHK. I don't know if its inclusion or exclusion has any significance. Usually you would expect the kantei-sho to have this square seal on it, but I did a google search and found others without it. Quote
Ed Hicks Posted September 25, 2016 Author Report Posted September 25, 2016 Thanks, Steve, Corection, Katsumitsu...I was messing with a Sukemune paper and transposed names. The other papers do not have that red seal on the right which made me curious. This is a really good sword and Chris Bowen went over the work sheet with me, but this looks different. Ed Quote
Shugyosha Posted September 26, 2016 Report Posted September 26, 2016 Hi Ed, Here's a bit more: 造り 込み: 鎬造り庵棟 Tsukurikomi: Shinogi zukuri, iori mune 鍛: 小板 目錬れる Kitae: Ko itame nereru (wrought/ forged) 刃紋:中直ぐ刃 Hamon: Chu suguba 鋩子: 直ぐ? 小刃返り Boshi: sugu? Ko maru kaeri 彫刻: Carving: This is where I start to lose it. There's reference to a lotus [蓮] which I can see on the blade. Also the part that follows on at the bottom of this section and turns the corner refers to Hachiman Dai Bosatsu [ 八幡大勒] but I can't do anything with the kanji and kana around it. I hope that helps and that someone can fill in the remainder for you. Best, John Quote
Ed Hicks Posted September 26, 2016 Author Report Posted September 26, 2016 John, thanks for the translations. Ed Quote
SteveM Posted September 27, 2016 Report Posted September 27, 2016 For the carving: 表 omote (front) 蓮台上に天照皇大神宮 Tenshō Kōdaijingū (aka the mythologica goddess Amaterasu) arising from a lotus 裏 ura (back) 蓮上に八幡大菩薩に二筋樋 Two grooves, and Hachiman the boddhisatva arising from a lotus I'm very intrigued about the representation of Amaterasu... possible to get any pics of the carvings? 3 Quote
Ed Hicks Posted October 4, 2016 Author Report Posted October 4, 2016 This sword did well in the shinsa-78 points. Quote
SteveM Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Ahh - funny, I was expecting a pictorial representation of Amaterasu... I didn't realize it was the actual words "Amaterasu Bodhissatva" arising from a lotus. Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Are you planning to polish it Ed? Quote
Ed Hicks Posted October 4, 2016 Author Report Posted October 4, 2016 Yes, along with about two dozen that need to be polished! I'm not sure who to use this time. Ed Quote
Ed Hicks Posted October 4, 2016 Author Report Posted October 4, 2016 I'm about 20 years behind on having swords polished. Suggestions for polishing this one? Quote
Brian Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Send it to me, and I'll uchiko it gently for 10 years or so, until some of the features can be seen clearer (only for very out of polish blades of course) and then I'll send it back free of charge 1 Quote
Stephen Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Jimmy H , Woody Hall, Ted T Big Mo ....all stateside. Quote

Jean Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Ted T. is very good, I have seen his work, anyway with this number of blades there is work for everybody. This sword should be sent to Yushu after polish. Quote
