Strange Naginata Sold On Ebay

Gentle Ffolke,

 

The following item has sold on eprey.  It is billed as a naginata but looks more like a Persian scimitar with its huge sori.  I have no doubt it is a genuine Japanese item, but that sori...  Any comments???

Very interesting. I guess just proof that swordsmiths must have been just as experimental and curious as any craftsman. Maybe it was a special order, or made experimentally for horseback use.

No way to know for sure, but it is very unique, and looks well made.

I see no reason why this isn't an out of the normal parameters, naginata. It seems perfect for those long sweeping cuts. John

It looks like a Nagamaki to me. The nakago and blade looks too long for to be a Naginata. It would have also been mounted on a much shorter pole if a Nagamaki.

A common result of retempering is exaggerated sori.  I would think that's at least a possibility here.
