Hi guys,

We at the JSS/US are in need of articles for our Newsletter. We'll take swords, fittings, armor, history, collecting, metalurgy, or most anything else you find interesting. Doesn't have to be the most scholarly material ever written; no one will complain if you dangle a participle. Got something on your mind? We'd love to hear from you.

John Eliyas is our editor. You can contact him at eliyasj@comcast.net

If I can help let me know.

Thanks, Grey (JSS/US Publications guy) gdoffin@cpinternet.com

Hi folks,

I convened an email discussion with the JSS/US Board, about sharing our articles with other sword groups.

We are OK with other groups using our material as long as permission is requested 1st and that our material isn't used for commercial purposes. While not required, it would be nice that if a group asks to use our material, they have something of theirs to offer in return.

I think every sword group in the west that publishes has seen a drop in membership, the JSS/US included. If you want us to continue publishing our Newsletter and translating Japanese references into English, you might consider becoming a member.

Great to hear, and hope others will take you up and reciprocate. Maybe this topic can be the start of something good for the future of these societies.

The public can only benefit from it.

Ken,

you did missunderstood certainly!

Mine comment is based on:

"I think every sword group in the west that publishes has seen a drop in membership, the JSS/US included. If you want us to continue publishing our Newsletter and translating Japanese references into English, you might consider becoming a member."

Also a bit confused, but perhaps Christian meant that the decline in memberships worldwide is of concern and he is not sure how that will be resolved?

In any case, I have received communication from Grey & the JSS/US Board of Directors saying that they are okay with other groups using their articles as long as permission is granted in advance, & nothing is used for commercial purposes. They would also appreciate reciprocation so that if you use one of their articles, you send them something they can use in return.

That sounds pretty darn fair to me, especially as JSS/US has a huge base of great articles. A small group like mine can't match them one-for-one, but I think that if we all send them useful articles of our own for them to publish - & also become affiliated members so they can continue doing their translations & other good work - everyone will benefit. My Japanese Sword Society of Hawaii is certainly going to work with them!

Hi Everyone,

Just sent Brian the Administrator a copy of my first tosogu article that was published this year in the JSSUS Newsletter Volume 44 No. 3. For the JSSUS members on the NMB this version will have higher resolution color photos of each Tosho tsuba example that I discuss in the article. This weekend I plan to start working on my next article that will come out early 2013. :D

P.S. I will also be listing my first article on my personal website as well.

Hi Ken,

I am not answering for the boss man (i.e. Brian) but I will be publishing my articles first in JSSUS newsletter then on NMB.

Agreed, any articles that will be published by a society should be published there first, and a few months later can be submitted here. Paid members should get the benefit of advanced publication. Don't want to tread on any toes.

Of course, there are topics and articles done here that can still be compiled into good articles for the sword societies too. Works both ways.
