  1. Thanks for all the help, I did seem challenging as the condition makes it hard to see clearly. Here are pictures as requested. It is not in very good condition, it is missing the trigger so needs some restoration
  2. $500 for a junk blade with mismatched gunto fittings is too much
  3. thanks again Moriyama-san, that looks better than Tomo, I think it is right, the pitting makes it hard to see easily. I appreciate the help
  4. thank you Moriyama-san. here is a better picture, now that I look at it I think I was wrong about Tomo
  5. matchlock with one collum of kanji, maybe the last few are the name? __ Tomo Saku? any help appreciated thanks
  6. if it is a katana, not a wak, then it is probably worth that. Some years ago I dealt with a buyer who looked for old swords that were trash to take back to Japan, he said he worked with a polisher who needed old metal to repair swords.
  7. if you are interested in a sword that is Stephen's contact him and work out a deal direct, probably better for both of you
  8. I handled 2 Soshu Yukimitsu daito, Shintogo Kunimitsu, couple of Ichimongi a Norishige tanto with a nakago so pristine it looked Shinto, Shodai Hizen Tadayoshi with nagahisa test, Rai. Norinaga, (all Juyo) and several other Kamakura and Nambukcho Juyo blades. It was the best opportunity to see and examine great blades outside the Dai Token Ichi
  9. Aoi Arts Tsuruta-san and staff (maybe family), he had some great swords, several Juyo Sukenao, Ichimonji, and others
  10. If the saya is wood it is quite common to have some type of fitting for the lock to latch to, I think different makers used a variety of parts.
  11. Through July 21, save 15% off all Standard & Premium line books with code DOGDAYS14 when you buy at least one book from shop.lulu.com
  12. small writing is the blade length
  13. wow! thanks. certainly educational. I appreciate all the input. No wonder I was in the dark. thanks to all
  14. for Pete here is the other side, I read it as Shoshin Kobuse Kitae Masafusa saku, glad it was not something simple. I appreciate the help
  15. I have a katana signed by Masafusa, I am having trouble with the 2 lines on the other side. Any help appreciated since the picture was flipped I removed it from here to sale bent necks. I will add the other side in a few minutes, I don't think it has anything to do with the other side but happy to add it.
  16. Craig I would pass. Looks to me that it is signed Kanenaga so any research on Kanemitsu does not help with this. For $1700 you can get a nice sword so I would take some time and learn a little so you can make a wise choice
  17. Danny Massey has some info on his site http://www.nihontocraft.com/Mito_Sukemitsu_Katana.html
  18. I can see where it may have had Hiromitsu lacquer that has worn away. The shape and construction gives the impression of latter Yamato work
  19. post some pictures, we will take a look and tell you what we can
  20. it appears to be signed katana-mei so unless a school that signed that way in Nambokucho I would think it is Muromachi. from the shape maybe Sue-koto to Keicho period
  21. Stephen not sure if I clearly understand what eBay is charging you for but I know they charge the final value fee on the amount the buyer pays you for shipping cost. I think they did that because some people tried to beat their fees buy selling items for a low amount but charge huge shipping cost to save on fees (EX sell a sword for $100 but charge $500 for shipping so buyer pays $600 but seller only paid fees on $100), so since a few were trying to game the system they changed it for all of us
  22. orphan fuchi, signed Tsunenao seems a good match for the reference $100 if anyone needs it, or happy to buy a matching kashira. It looks better in hand, the flash and super close up were not kind.
  23. it is a wood base covered with same' of the tanned skin of a giant ray, they use the shin from the belly. Japan is an island so they have an abundance of marine life so use ray skin sort of like we use leather as we have cattle
  24. you are right, it is army not navy. these were made from early 1900's till mid 1930's. hard to say when, my guess is later. I think $500-800 range in the condition
  25. I think correct except my translation differs in the name and exact year Tadamitsu and I think 1488
