  1. On many historical examples the Ito is lacquered.
  2. Yes metal Tsunagi are often found, it would appear the Koshirae & Habaki were setup as a display - given the decent quality of everything shown.
  3. Looks like a metal Tsunagi to keep the fittings together, the notches look like they are meant for a display stand.
  4. Dan we are certainly at opposing ends of the definition of "nice display piece".....
  5. Number #3 is the pick of the bunch in both quality and condition.
  6. Thank you Piers, any thoughts on what this could mean?
  7. Have read this as "メカ" or possibly "乂尢", could some kind soul please confirm which one it is?
  8. That's very special, would any other family members know?
  9. Hi Ray, very unique sword. Are there any writing or characters on the Seppa or under the Fuchi?
  10. This is a good quality sword, the mounts are the better quality pre-WWII style. Did your grandfather serve in WWII? It's important to record any history behind it as these details can be lost to time very quickly.
  11. Nice Gendai, very unusual to see mounted like this.

    Fatal flaw?

Total Hamon blowout! Curious as to how that would even happen?
  13. Mounts are good quality as well, would be nice to see the rest of the sword.
  14. Definitely one of the very best fittings makers. They appear to have been the primary supplier of Koshirae for the Yasukuni shrine. Some nice examples of Suya mounts:
  15. Yes, this fellow is rather infamous. He unfortunately re-polishes blades and uses them for cutting, best to avoid doing business with someone who mistreats Nihonto like that.
  16. Your job for this would be to coordinate professional restoration by traditional artisans. Not sure where those would be located in Europe, perhaps a French member can assist. On no account would it be appropriate for you to perform restoration yourself.
  17. A very nice and original Type 94. Mounts are excellent, the 2nd hanger has never been removed and all fittings match. Underneath the Samegawa the Tsuka is wrapped with a thin sheet of metal. Included is a field grade tassel. Blade with Bohi is signed Taira Moritsune and dated Eiroku 3 (1561) and is Suriage. Condition is good with some light staining and small Ware. https://nihontoclub.com/smiths/MOR1000 Please see detailed photos. Nagasa: 27" - 68.6cm Mihaba 1.14" - 2.9cm OAL: 40" - 101cm SOLD
  18. There is a distinct mark of quality about everything here, great find.
  19. 1000 yen was not an insignificant amount back then, it may be a sword with potential.
  20. The remnants of fittings suggest a Kyu Gunto saya, a Shin Gunto Fuchi.....it's all rather hideous. The blade may be an older one.
  21. Reseller of yahoo Japan auction items, they likely don't own the sword and just bid on it.
  22. Surprised RIA even stooped to listing those, basically all junk level.
