  1. First we need pictures to determine whether you have destroyed or saved this sword.
  2. I'd advise getting it done professionally, a good job will add value.
  3. Rare is an understatement. If you hoisted up the price tag it would get the enemy running.
  4. Type 98 Shin Gunto with combat pattern saya and leather snap retention. These were more practical and cheaper fittings options for officers compared to the standard Type 98 fittings.
  5. Hi Bruce, pretty standard later war Shin Gunto with combat saya and clip retention. Shame your Dad sold the nicer one, sounded like it had a Field Grade tassel on it (Major to Colonel rank). However you can get the handle rewrapped without taking away any value, it's a lost cause at this point anyway. https://www.Japanese-swords.com/pages/hndl.htm
  6. I agree, once they start nailing the kissaki and proper proportions it will be a minefield out there.
  7. If I hadn't recently made a purchase I would jump on this, very nice piece at a good price.
  8. Andrew Ickeringill should be able to do an appraisal and window for you, if you aren't already aware of him.
  9. Good quality koshirae always a plus, mei isn't raising any instant alarmbells. Hard call in that polish.
  10. If it's priced at gimei levels absolutely, it is a very quality looking piece.
  11. The one thing that always sets off alarms on these is the tsuka almost looks blurred or sandblasted, the real NCO's are usually crisp and bold and well defined. It's hard to really pin down, just doesn't sit right with the eye. Otherwise that is dangerously good to newcomers or unwary collectors looking for that ebay goldmine.
  12. Very big name, treat as gimei.
  13. Reminds me of the nomenclature of German WW2 weapons in the west for decades; "Schmeisser" for the MP38/40, when Hugo Schmeisser had no involvement in the design of the gun. "Spandau" for the MG34/MG42, left over name from WW1 era MG08's. Type 3 is just as erroneous in light of official designations by the IJA and hopefully will be viewed as such by collectors eventually.
  14. Yes, up to customer and what stock the sword supply store had by then.
  15. Pure alcohol works wonders on the more stubborn bits of gunk and staining as well.

    Lamination

Sometimes it seems like he has gotten Youtube comments and this forum mixed up.

    Lamination

I never said it existed or didn't exist, I was simply asking for some sort of reference or fact to back up such a controversial opinion. However if all you have is Strawman arguments to bring to the table, so be it.

    Lamination

There was alot of research done during the development of the Koa Isshin Mantetsu swords, including cross sections of some very high quality swords. Very interesting read: http://ohmura-study.net/998.html
  19. Fatal. An unlisted flaw like this is completely unacceptable and is grounds for a refund. I would not have a problem if the price and listing reflected it and you got a steal, considering these aren't combat/martial arts swords anymore there is no risk beyond problems reselling it.

    What Is This?

Yes, nothing more than a wallhanger. I'd be interested too, they often have some funny things on them.

    Lamination

You can't simply make such a blanket and controversial statement with no associated proof or reference.
  22. I would say likely it was a massproduced blade, the mune is flat. Still a nice find, worth keeping a hold of.
