Why Do People Pay More At Auctions?
1tallsword replied to lonely panet's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
ALL OF THE ABOVE I FIND ARE CORRECT....... there are many reasons, which all have been broken down here.. and might I add for the thrill of the win. when in reality you are not winning anything, simply paying too much.... -

Any Guesses? Fun Time !
1tallsword replied to 1tallsword's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
well this is why its such a great world of learning, disagreements and discussion such as this. Thank you Brian for your comment. Brian, I did take into consideration in my study the possibility of the ha machi and mune machi had been moved up, after looking at the hamon at the hamachi and taking that into consideration and the terrible patination and sloppy file marks its clear something is going on in this area.in picture 11 it shows in the middle the mune of the blade and the right side and left side. clearly one can see the very clean precise horizontal line that is visible on the right side, then on the mune and continues onto and through the left side. now i see fresh patination over it that does not match the rest of the nakago, Kiri and suji chigai and buffing, rubbing and what ever one might call all the erratic file marks.. certainly not Kesho... I see in my eyes a welded nakago. FYI .. as mentioned in my previous post the weld that I see was not as noticeable on my desk top as when i viewed it in high res. on my 24 inch flat screen.. -

thank you all for tuning in. I agree with what gilles,Brian and jean have stated. It certainly is a cause for suspicion in this area and would need further in hand inspection to be 100% sure, but from photos provided it sure appears that way. Jean thank you for providing that link to a great resource on flaws. Paulb I believe they are stating papers as Tokubetsu Kicho which were in place from 1950-1982 .. blue papers koshu tokubetsu kicho were from 1973-1982 . now have a closer look folks in pictures 8 and 11 look in the transition area of the blade and nakago, look just behind the mune-machi and ha-machi also look at the Yasui-me ... any guesses as to what im trying to point out here ???... I studied these pictures for over an hour and on 3 different computers and one in high res... it is way more noticeable in high res. op to a old standard computer screen. -
hello all. its fun time.... now that this auction has completed I will post it here for a learning exercise so to speak. This is a good example of "if something is too good to be true" or a "price seems too good to be true" it probably is. alright folks here we go.. any guesses as to why this wakizashi sold for 1/3 the price it should have? there are a couple issues that can be seen but one major one that if not looked at closely may go undetected.. any guesses ??? here is the link ( 141690532438 ) or http://www.ebay.com/itm/WAKIZASHI-ANTIQUE-Japanese-SWORD-NBTHK-TOKUBETSU-KICHO-UNSIGNED-SUKEKANE-EDO-/141690532438?nma=true&si=iZ%252F7a1j9iJTMmBrqQhr%252FAQbqs5c%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 just copy and paste.. or simply click on link

thank you all for your help and leads. I have managed to secure a sukehira wakizashi and sukenao wakizashi ( a kind person that had my personal email forwarded my contact info to a collector that contacted me with these two blades in the same collection). I am still on the hunt .....
-
I cant make anything out by these pictures, they are blurry and fuzzy. can you snap some clear pictures please.
-
Thats hard to answer as too many variables determine costs, tanto?,wakizashi ?or katana?, papered? , level of paper? none papered? condition of polish. koshirae? ect.. ect.. if the item is price accordingly and fairly to what I have seen on the market and other swords I have purchased then im a buyer . Im not looking for a steal here folks, but im also aware of current market values and am not interested in people fishing for a home run either ... cheers.

message sent Jon. cant figure why the PM wont work on your end. I sent a PM to you, let me know if it came through. also sent a message to your private email, cheers.

Item Held Up In Us Customs
1tallsword replied to reeder's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
customs can hold items for up to 10 working days to do inspections and investigations(not including weekends or holidays) if nothing is found to be an issue or illegal activity they have to legally release the item.they from time to time will make sure values are consistent with purchase price and contact the buyer to confirm so. its also quite possible that the scan into the postal system was not uploaded directly and in which case it will take awhile for the next scan to update in the system. keep in mind even though no scan or tracking is showing up on there web site it can still be in transit and you may check it one day and all of a sudden see an update with several scans and the item is in the foreign country ect... you can also get a snag if the item is not stated as "personal" if an item is for a business or commercial then you get into another kettle of fish all together and thats a conversation for another day. I have been a licensed importer and exporter of weapons for 10 years now and have seen almost everything in my time... -

use the kanji pages at the top of the page here under research. chris is right this is a very easy beginner kanji and a good one to learn on, you will feel self gratitude once you have done it yourself. cheers
-
thank you very much Jean. I will use these ! much apreciated, cheers.

very nice pictures Jean, much better pictures than mine I like your blade. yes there was some error on my part and lack of description on some parts of the blade. as you pointed out I failed to mention shirake utsuri earlier in my posts when confirming it had utsuri. you make a good point and I hope this was a good lesson for anyone reading that the most minor detail left out can hinder ones decision in kantei. for example by me confirming utsuri, led everyone to bizen, and it should. but for some reason ,not thinking ,(maybe I had one of those insomnia nights Darcy spoke of ) i did not mention shirake, if I had done so the answers would have been mino as Jean pointed out. In the future i will do my best to list every precise detail I see and make it not so much a guessing game or shot in the dark so to speak,cheers....

thank you Jean for your time and comments. Yes I agree it is near impossible to judge by pictures alone, let alone my terrible pictures that I did apologize for in my initial post. I was only looking for possible opinions in which i got, and to have some fun. I am well aware of the kantei process. thank you for mentioning the aoi art website, as I have viewed it in the past I am always up for reminders.thank you. sorry if my initial description was not up to your standards, I will do my best to improve on my skills next time. I did however give the basic info needed less the sori measurement. it is 1.2cm. I just figured by the full length picture one could tell it was a very shallow sori. Let me say I am no expert and do not portray to be. I always try to stay humble and modest and have fun. since you ask, this is what i see when in hand. Hamon- Gunome, small ko-ashi I see Kinsuji and sunagashi and bright Nei..... Jihada - Itame and masame.... Boshi- ko-maru / hakikake. I see a faint shirake utsuri. I hope this is of use to you. thank you.

Im fairly confident after a lengthy in hand inspection, speaking with several people, looking at comparables on line and putting all the pieces of the puzzle together that what chris bowen is stating is correct. the sword is a soshu influenced Mino naoe shizu kanenobu, I have also spoke recently with someone that recognized the sword from the past and had held it in hand and they felt strongly the same.
