  1. Although "migite" is the more common reading for 右手, both 馬手 and 右手 are pronounced "mete" in this context.
  2. Tôkyô Bijutsu Club - the nearest subway station (5 minutes walk) is Onarimon. I stay West of Shinjuku (at my daughter's apt.) and it takes me 30 minutes to get there. Also, the Dubliner's Pub in Shinjuku is one of the DTI's participants informal HQ, not too far from your hotel (however, all those awfully drunk people might step on your hands when you crawl back ... ).
  3. I'm with Thierry, but would rather say gilded than painted.

    Higo Koshirae...

I’m resurrecting this thread to show off the Higo Koshirae I bought during my recent trip to Japan. The Tsuba is signed “Yashiro Jû / Sandaime Jingo Saku”. Tokubetsu Hozon for the Koshirae :D.
  5. I’m glad you enjoyed your first trip to the DTI (and Japan) so much. It was a real pleasure meeting you and your wonderful wife in person. Btw, Barry handled the Kurokawa study session much better than I did: after looking at 20 swords, I always had to stare at a white wall for 10 minutes to re-boot my brain. Barry just kept going and going … :D
  6. You Canadians are a funny bunch - Ikeda-san looks like a midget between the two of you!
  7. Issued by an auction house by the name of Kawakami who also claims to be a polisher in the Honami tradition. Very strange, have never seen a paper from them before. It's for a mumei sword by Muramasa.
  8. That's easy, someone who doesn't know him .John's huge frame might be intimidating to some, but he's soft-spoken and one of the most polite people I know.
  9. Second from the left is John Grasso from Australia, third a regular DTI visitor from Europe whose name escapes me, fourth a NMB member who might identify himself - or not .
  10. The study session at Mr. Kurokawa’s house: almost 100 swords of the highest caliber (I think the “lowest” level was Tokubetsu Jûyô [!]). I can’t thank Mr. Kurokawa enough for this fantastic learning opportunity and all the trouble he went to; the general consensus was that it beat hands down the Taikai!
  11. The famous Kurokawa party on the last day of the DTI – among the guests of honor was a diet member /former interior minister. The entertainment and food was great as usual!
  12. The Yakatabune was not as well attended as in the years before, but we had lots of fun. A big thanks to Bob Hughes for organizing it yet again!
  13. A little late, but as promised, here are the pictures of this year’s various DTI events. First the DTI, from the entrance to the smokers’ corner:
  14. An export permit will be granted in most cases. However, once a Jūyō-Bijutsuhin leaves Japan, it is stricken from the register and thus looses its "official" status. Occasionally exceptions are made, but this involves a lot of paperwork. I've seen legitimate Jūyō-Bijutsuhin outside of Japan myself.
  15. Two Kogatana by Natsuo I saw yesterday, made of silver. The interesting thing about them is the use of Katakiri with both a left and right angle, and especially the smoothness of the cuts - you would need very strong magnification to see the hammer strokes.
  16. Hagihara-sensei from the NBTHK remarked only yesterday that rubbing a Tsuba with cotton too vigorously is not a good idea since it will make the iron too shiny, and often even leads to rubbing off of the patina in places, especially the rim. Even experts like Sasano were "guilty" of that. Handling/rubbing it with your bare hands seems to be the only fail-safe method, but it might take quite some years until the desired effect shows. No shortcuts, unfortunately.
  17. Upper case = on-yomi, lower case = kun-yomi.
  18. I took quite a few pictures at the Yakatabune event, the DTI, and Mr. Kurokawa's party - all in RAW format, so I have to properly process them before showing them here. Give me a few days - I'm still quite busy these coming days - and I'll post them for the usual "who's-who-game". Highlights will include squid tentacles protruding from Cyrus' mouth and many more unique shots :-).
