Darcy Posted November 2, 2014 Report Posted November 2, 2014 I picked up a futatokoromono with no papers at the DTI based on "just liking them"... signature is Hisanori on the back. The style seems to be related to Omori and I have two candidates for Hisanori. Either Chizuka Hisanori or Mito Hisanori. I had read that Mito Hisanori was a daimyo and made these as a hobby essentially training under Teruhide. Chizuka Hisanori I don't know anything about but seems to be high level. I don't have any examples of the Mito guy but the signature is close enough to the first that it just may be a gimei. Or maybe OK. Most of it looks pretty right and the kao seems to be the kao of Chizuka Hisanori. What I don't like is that in the one example I could find from Mike Y's site that has Hozon papers, the two horizontals in the Nori meet up with the right vertical in the left radical but clearly do not here. If you were copying a signature though that seems to be one you would copy correctly and the rest of it is close enough that it is not drawn out of thin air. So, don't know what to think about it. I have a guarantee of Hozon. Just the mei for now as I'm too tired to take a reasonable photo. Quote
Stephen Posted November 2, 2014 Report Posted November 2, 2014 Please share the set when you have time. Quote
Pete Klein Posted November 2, 2014 Report Posted November 2, 2014 From Shinsen Kinko Meikan, Kokubo Kenichi, page 307: From Toso Kodogu Meiji Taikei, Wakayama, volume I, page 271 and 272: I believe this is Chizuka Hisanori, Haynes 01508, student of Omori Teruhide. Quote
Brian Posted November 2, 2014 Report Posted November 2, 2014 From Pete's example, I would say it is good. Markus' book also shows some examples, showing there are some variations in his mei. Brian Quote
Darcy Posted November 2, 2014 Author Report Posted November 2, 2014 Wow, Pete, very impressed. Just had a sleep and woke up to that pile of great news. Mine is right in the middle I think of all of that. Sure feel good about it now. I will do some photos when the sun comes up and share the rest of the work. Mike Y's set of menuki was a bit unlike these above in small parts of the mei and I just assumed those were standard things. So bottle of Scotch to you Pete is coming. Quote
Darcy Posted November 3, 2014 Author Report Posted November 3, 2014 Uber high res repository here: http://www.nihonto.ca/omori-kodogu Screen sized for NMB posted as images. Kinda crappy pictures just after sunrise. The Hisanori has the crests in silver. Bit of gilding may be going on the kogai dragon. Bonus item included. Omori Hidetomo, student of Terutomo. These are Hozon. These waves are filled with nice little sea creatures including a whale. Shibuichi with the crests of the waves in shakudo. So, a good ref signature in this image. Quote
Darcy Posted November 3, 2014 Author Report Posted November 3, 2014 The thing that really gets me is that little squid climbing up the edge. This photo is so blown up and these animals are so tiny. I never saw him before that. Just has so much charm in how he worked this theme. Quote
raiden Posted November 9, 2014 Report Posted November 9, 2014 For Darcy, This is the set i have on display at the LACMA exhibit. It is said top shelf works are done in kinzogan Mike Quote

Pete Klein Posted November 9, 2014 Report Posted November 9, 2014 Darcy -- some great work there! The F/K is intriguing. If I had a hat I'd take it off to yah!!! Quote
Darcy Posted November 10, 2014 Author Report Posted November 10, 2014 Thanks Mike and everyone... very raw in this area. Quote
Darcy Posted March 14, 2015 Author Report Posted March 14, 2015 Well I am surprised but my Hisanori flunked with the NBTHK. I am in them for about $2k and have a guarantee with the seller who will take them back. I'll be bringing them back at the end of March. If anyone thinks they know better than the NBTHK on these and/or wants them in spite of flunking, contact me via email, you can have them at cost. Doesn't mean anything to me to take them back or give to someone else. They do look like Omori school but there were a lot of people who tried copying waves design down the road. The work looked good to me so I don't know on it what exactly to think. Quote
Brian Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 Even if mumei, these look worth every cent of $2K imho. Brian Quote
Darcy Posted March 14, 2015 Author Report Posted March 14, 2015 And *poof* they are gone. They are really nice actually. Going through a period of fiscal restraint though until the oil situation is over so ... damn. Quote

Good to know it also happens to high profile collectors like yourself. Their are gimei at all levels of quality during the Edo Period. Quote
