markturner Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Hi, I wondered if anyone could say what age / smith is shown on the Mei pictured here? http://www.motka.com/01.03a/066%20007.jpg I found the sword on e bay and it looked a nice clean blade at a good price. Thanks, Mark Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 To me you need to show the other side for the smith name and possible date. That is the location. John Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 I think it says, "Made yesterday in China." Anyone else get that impression? Grey Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Yes, I think you are right 國大連陳... makes no sense to me. Construction of the nakago is dodgy as well. John Quote
Lindus Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Any pics of the blade??? Reminds me of an inscription on a decent Japanese blade, it was to a Chinese general engraved as a presentation, visited the area in Chong ching but their lack of English & my poor Japanese/Chinese & English helped little....... Recently saw a collectors new purchase from auction {not ebay} genuine IJP gunto mounts with a rusted but sugata wise nice katana, mei similar but the real give away was the hada the looked like a map of London underground {Subway for colonist readers}. Guido Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 To the left of the Mekugi-ana you still can see part of "中". The inscription reads "China - Dalian - Chen Chaopo". Quote

Brian Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Hi,This iron bar was made by Paul Chen in China. Brian PS - Amazing how many of Paul Chen's swords come up in enquiries here. I think I should be claiming royalties from the factory! Quote
runagmc Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 At least they are more up front about their items, and don't try to sell them as "antiques", like so many in China... Quote
