Bugyotsuji Posted September 25 Report Posted September 25 Why? Hamfish, do we have to read the whole page to find out why you dislike this dealer? 1 Quote
Hokke Posted September 25 Report Posted September 25 Because they lengthened the description by repeating the same information? 1 Quote
lonely panet Posted September 25 Author Report Posted September 25 (edited) Look at the tsuka and seppa guys. Its not original. Deliberately modified meguki and punched in seppa to make a a pre 44 pattern blade fit just for financial purposes Edited September 25 by lonely panet 1 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted September 25 Report Posted September 25 Never bought anything from Aoi myself, so no expectations to start with. 1 Quote
lonely panet Posted September 26 Author Report Posted September 26 i have had direct dealings with him, and know 2 peaple that have had both restoration survices provided and purchased from him. hence my lack of faith in this dealer Quote
Rawa Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 (edited) @Bruce Pennington what you think? Tsuka was modified looking on only 1 mekugi ana at nakago and refit one being in use but it's still yasukuni-to. Would you rather choose shirasaya? Sure, but T3 koshirae is still worth similar money. @Volker62? 5k$ for pappered blade of IIIrd grade yasukuni smith is too much? And could you write us about koshirae which yasukuni can be found in. Edited September 26 by Rawa Quote
Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 I'd like to avoid making a generell assessment here. I haven't seen or heard of a Yasukunishrine sword in this type 3 mount yet. (after over 35 years of collecting) But that doesn't mean everything! a few in Kai Gunto over the years However, I've occasionally purchased from Aoi Art over the past few years and have been sttisfied with both, the service and the product. 1 Quote
Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 I would always buy a product from Aoi Art again and will probably do so again in the future. Have a nice weekend everyone!!!! Quote
Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 Rawa please keep in mind, that all swordsmith who were allowed to sign the" Yasu" were subjected to a rigorous selection process and had undergone serval years of training! To write about from a "pappered blade"(whatever this is?) made by a third rate Yasukuni smith is in my opinion inapprorriate, sorry! 3 Quote
Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 Please note that we the Gajin , were the first to have access to the Japanese sword and especially to the Japanese culture to this extent after WWII yasukuni shrine swords were a high quality product, (very expnsive) manufactered under strictspecifications and under the supervision of a appropriate experts in the spirit of the Japanese national pride of this time, in the spirit of Bushido. 2 Quote
Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 these yasukuni swords had such a high presige, that the Japanese Emperor was didvinely endowed with them! 1 Quote
Nicholas Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 (edited) @Volker62 I believe what @Rawa is referring to (correct me if I’m wrong) by third tier is the ranking chart at the bottom of the Jp-swords.com site that gives the author’s personal opinion on the rankings of the Yasukuni shrine smiths. Bruce Pennington Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 I have never dealt with that shop. They seem to sell some really high quality blades. Only once or twice have I heard complaints about various practices. I wouldn't rush to assume the fittings were done by the seller. These swords have often passed through many hands over the past 80 years. There is no way to know who did the match-up, except for the rare cases where we've got photos of a previous sale and compared to the current sale, there was obvious fittings changes (not this seller, but another one). 1 Quote
Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 thank you Nicholas for me the term pappered blade has a strange aftertaste, which flows smewhatunfortuantely into this formulation? Quote
Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 what does this mean pappered blade? For me ,sorry it has a slightly derogatory connotation??? and in my opinion, that would be derogatory toward this sword. Quote
Rawa Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 (edited) Finished project. Pappered+shirasaya+polished/no need for polish. Buy and enjoy. You have crazy reaction towards those swords. Edited September 26 by Rawa Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 Rawa, re “paper”. (if it has papers, it’s papered.) Etymology: papyrus 1 Quote
lonely panet Posted September 26 Author Report Posted September 26 each to there own, but l much more prefur a good blade in shirasaya alone rather then bastardized koshirae to the sword for market value. much like this, the blade is far above the modified dirk mounts Tanto: Teishitsu Gigeiin 77 Okina Miyamoto Kanenori(NBTHK Hozon Token) - Japanese Sword Shop Aoi-Art 1 Quote

Volker62 Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 Rawa Over the years, I've deveoped a more informed reaction to these swords, that is based more on facts, than on speculation Quote

If the koshirae was assembled before it was tendered to AOI, I dont see why it would be a negative on them as a dealer. I guess there is something to said of a dealer who doesn't disclose a frankenstein koshirae, perhaps that is the source of your ire? 1 Quote

Rivkin Posted September 27 Report Posted September 27 (edited) Another discussion that goes somewhere. I know a few dealers whom I reasonably trust on descriptions, photography and moneyback guarantee. I never bought much from them - they deal in things somewhat outside my interest. On the other hand Christies are awful in photography, descriptions, no warranty, false promises, random people. I bought from them and many people do. Because they have a brand and good items. Simply don't pay attention to most things they write down. There are more dangerous guys, those who do put in the effort when writing things, but either far more incompetent than they think they are (99% of dealers), or they are shrewd. Or both. Yes, Aoi Art has a thingy where they affix a koshirae to most blades they sell. I loved it as a beginner (its a real samurai sword), less than thrilled now, but there is some match between blade quality and koshirae, and even at the bottom its not "awful-awful". Big thoroughput shop with many good items. Edited September 27 by Rivkin 4 Quote
