zanilu Posted August 15 Report Posted August 15 Dear all. I have recently acquire a nice Heianjo Zogan tsuba. It is not a masterpiece but it is a nice one ansyway. The design is not the usual karakusa with trellis that. There are those bell shaped pieces that are somehow reminiscent of the koto string bridges. Any help in the identification of the theme is welcome. Best Regards Luca 11 Quote

No real idea what the theme is, but it reminds me of the privacy screens set up around Samurai commanders "Jinmaku" The small symbols could represent mon also seen on these screens - Just a wild theory. 5 1 Quote

zanilu Posted August 16 Author Report Posted August 16 Here is the other side: It could be Moriyama san. Your guess is a good one. However the presence of those inverted U shape elements, the small spheres and the small cross-pieces make me wonder. The inverted U shape can be the trellis supports, and the small sphere buds? Any guess is welcome Regards Luca 2 1 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted August 16 Report Posted August 16 The inverted silver and brass inlays (plus crossbar) look like one of the 本 Kamon, e.g. for Honda. I have a couple of examples: And 3 1 Quote

Charlie C Posted August 18 Report Posted August 18 A quite interesting pattern - just wondering if it could be some plants threaded onto a pole for drying. The small spheres could be fruits, and cross-pieces might be barrier plates or sliced fruits. Best, C. C. 1 Quote
zanilu Posted August 19 Author Report Posted August 19 Charlie It was my feeling too, something not natural, a plant on a trellis or similar. Those inverted U shapes are intriguing. Regards Luca 1 Quote
Scogg Posted August 19 Report Posted August 19 (edited) My first thought was a Meiji period “battle flag” pole. I’m not sure the Japanese name for one. I once saw one for sale at a militaria show that had a kirimon brass ball on the end, and 3 legs to mount/plant into the ground. Two of those three legs looked similar to that inverted U shape. Been spending the last couple days looking for an example online with no luck; so I think all the opinions above are probably closer to the mark. -Sam Edited August 20 by Scogg Spelling of inverted 1 Quote
