I think guntō collectors will enjoy browsing through this thread over at Axis History Forum (AHF).  The thread was started in 2009 by an Australian and is still ongoing.  Basically, it is a thread of photographs depicting the Japanese military.  There is a sword picture on just about every page and hence my recommendation.

Dan, maybe a dark brown to go along with the belt?  If my memory is correct, @IJASWORDS had a sword that had a leather handle covering?

I was guessing black since it appears darker than the saya cover leather that is brown. It does not apprear much darker, but just a shade. <-- trying to guess at a black and white photo. lol

Ran across this November 1944 picture of Japanese naval officers and one clearly has a single hanger on his sword.

The hanger looks quite different, perhaps a modified civilian sword?

There is one in both I-36 and I-37.  They both look like they were civil swords originally.
