cdrcm12 Posted November 19, 2022 Report Posted November 19, 2022 Evening, Picked this small mokko tsuba up recently and would appreciate some advice on potential school please? My thoughts are Yamakichibei or Katchushi, with the Amida yasurime and quite thin plate? Tsuba size: Height: 65mm Width: 61mm Mimi thk: 2.6mm - 2.8mm Seppa dai thk: 2.8mm - 2.95mm Nakago ana: 26.5mm x 7.5mm Hitsu-ana plugged with gold foil on copper. Many thanks 1 Quote

ROKUJURO Posted November 24, 2022 Report Posted November 24, 2022 Colin, not all TSUBA can be related to a school. If there are no recognizable typical features, it can be difficult. In this case, I think you can exclude KACHUSHI. Looking closely, I think it is an early to mid-EDO apprentice work that combines some style elements from different times and traditions. 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted November 25, 2022 Report Posted November 25, 2022 I tend to agree with Jeans assessment - the Amida-Yasuri is not 'master' level, there is some gaps in the lines and spacing problems. The ategane are made in a more refined way and made much later than the guard. JMO 1 Quote

Curran Posted November 25, 2022 Report Posted November 25, 2022 It feels more like a late Edo Futogoya Norisuke school hommage to the earlier Yamakichibei style tsuba. The Futogoya largely became the restoration specialist for central Japan. Something happened to the family sword koshirae: ask them to may a piece that was in keeping with the original. The gold plug filled hitsuana are a little on the large side, but maybe that was in keeping with something else. This is a tsuba where it is hard to say with precision: it is A, or it is B. Just not enough evidence. If you sent it in for NBTHK papers 3 times, you'd probably get at least 2 different answers. 2 Quote
