okami Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 Hello, please help me with the translation of the inscriptions on two sword handles. Thanks in advance and many greetings from Bremen, Germany. Paul Wolff Quote
Rich S Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 I believe the top scan's smith name is Kunitoshi. Although not 100% sure of the "toshi". Rich S Quote
Grey Doffin Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 I agree with Kunitoshi for the 1st oshigata. I haven't translated the others but I notice that they appear to have been made with the soot and cellophane tape method. This isn't good practice, as the soot will change the patina of the blade's nakago. Ink stone and fine paper do a better job and they do no damage to the sword. Grey Quote
Stephen Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 I've had no damage to nakago with the smoke Oshigata, just needs a good cleaning, do a search for Takayama to for the latter Oshigata. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 I don't think we want to tell anyone to give a nakago a good cleaning. Traditional ink stone and paper oshigata aren't difficult and don't require messing with the nakago. There is no reason to use soot. Grey Quote
reinhard Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 The long signature in scan2 eventually reads: Taka-yama To Tan-ren(?) X X UJIFUSA tsukuru (kore) i.e. "made this". Both mei look like Showa-To/WWII to me and somebody more familiar with ToKo of these times might come up with a more precise answer. reinhard Quote
Nobody Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Full translation for scan_2: 高山刀鍛練所於氏房造(之) – At Takayama-To Forge, Ujifusa made this. 以安来鋼作之 – This is made from Yasuki steel. Quote
okami Posted June 7, 2009 Author Report Posted June 7, 2009 Hello All, Thanks for the help with the translation of the signatures. I will in the future other OSHIGATA'S and got the advice to heart, no more soot to use. Thanks again for the translation. Your Paul Wolff Quote
