Jrbjag Posted December 12, 2021 Report Posted December 12, 2021 Good morning! I'm not planning to bid on any of these items, but curious to see if any have thoughts on these curious items. https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/117844227_japanese-style-tanto-sword This tanto looks pretty, and nice presentation, but I haven't seen any Japanese tantos with a recess that looks like this or a hamon that looks so 2 dimensional. Photos aren't great, but is this something other than a modern display piece? https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/118228310_samurai-sword-leather-scabbard This looks gunto-esque... but what's going on here? The tsuba flowers are white and it looks like overspray on both the pink and yellow color. I can see the milling marks in the photo of the engraving, so that part is machine made. The metal layers in the sword look interesting, though. Has there ever been a leather-wrapped handle on a genuine gunto? Best, John Quote
Stephen Posted December 12, 2021 Report Posted December 12, 2021 The latter is Chinese knock off. Yes they did have all weather gear for gunto with leather. Normally it was like a sock that pulled over it. 1 Quote

Spartancrest Posted December 18, 2021 Report Posted December 18, 2021 Both examples are Chinese - and not very good at that - when you see a date or name cut into the blade just above the habaki, give it a miss! I can't read the kanji but I bet it says something like made in 1650 which is total BS. Quote
suketaka Posted December 18, 2021 Report Posted December 18, 2021 the first is a 30 years old Paul Chen Hanwei forge Tanto. I sold the same for 300 $ a few years ago. 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted December 18, 2021 Report Posted December 18, 2021 For those who can read there is no need for discussion. The (correct) description text says Japanese style TANTO sword Quote
