PNSSHOGUN Posted April 17, 2021 Report Posted April 17, 2021 Yes, there are many Gimei out there of this smith. Quote

SteveM Posted April 17, 2021 Report Posted April 17, 2021 Its the era name. The whole thing is 享和二年八月吉日 真之甲伏鍛此二刀限余不造 Kyōwa ninen hachigatsu kichijitsu Mano kōbuse kono nitō kagiri amari tsukurazu A lucky day in August 1802 Made in kōbuse style ... (?) I don't know what is meant by the bit after that, but my guess is that this is part of a two-sword set that was made like this, and that it was a unique set ("made no others like it"). He often used 15-plate kōbuse style, and engraved that on his swords. This only mentions kōbuse (nothing about how many layers). 1 1 Quote
ribendao Posted April 18, 2021 Author Report Posted April 18, 2021 Thanks for the translation Steve. This seems like a pretty detailed and unique mei. Are these kind of mei common among other gimei swords? Quote
SteveM Posted April 18, 2021 Report Posted April 18, 2021 If possible, forget about what is written on the nakago for a moment. Imagine it is blank. Does the sword look like an actual Suishinshi Masahide sword? Does the shape, the hada, the tip, the hamon, have the qualities of a Suishinshi Masahide sword? If so, its a good thing, and you can start to debate the merits of the signature. He is a big name. People will go to great lengths to fake a big name (so, yes, it isn't strange to find a long, counterfeit name). Quote
ribendao Posted April 18, 2021 Author Report Posted April 18, 2021 I don’t have any pictures of the whole sugata but the hamon and kissaki seem to be on point. Quote

You could really do with a shot of the whole blade but if you are thinking of buying it then go for what the kyugunto is worth and anything else is a bonus. Let us know how it turns out. All the best. Quote

All the best. It ended up going for $4100 before auction fees. So I guess someone thought it was worth the investment. 1 Quote
